Steven Kostanski’s bizarre creature comedy Frankie Freako is getting a retro gaming spin-off, and players can start exploring its chaotic world now. Developed by FreakZone Games under Bit Bot Media, the video game reimagines the film’s universe as an 8-bit action-platformer with roguelite mechanics, destructible environments, and procedurally assembled levels.
The game serves as a prequel to the cult-favorite film, taking players to Freak World, where a tyrant named Munch has seized control and forced its mischievous inhabitants to work for his corporation. Frankie and his friends set out to overthrow him by climbing the dangerous Munch Tower.
Frankie Freako Gameplay Combines Retro Platforming With Roguelite Progression
Players must fight their way up Munch Tower, which features procedurally assembled floors ranging from underground sewers to heavily guarded upper levels. The game mixes traditional side-scrolling combat with modern roguelite systems, allowing players to smash robots, destroy scenery, collect loot, and throw objects at enemies.
Time management is also central to each run. Bingo Bongo, a hacker helping the group, can only delay Munch Industries’ security forces for a limited period. Defeating enemies adds extra time, while clearing a floor unlocks the elevator. Players must decide whether to escape quickly or risk exploring for additional rewards.
After completing each floor, players can select new abilities to customize their builds. These upgrades come in different rarities and include character-specific powers such as Garlic Soda and Fart Loafers. Between attempts, collected loot can be spent at Bingo’s upgrade store to improve starting abilities, making every run contribute to future progress.

Steven Kostanski and Bit Bot Media Discuss the Game
Director Steven Kostanski praised the adaptation for embracing the spirit of older movie tie-in games while respecting the original film. He described it as a “retro blast of fun” inspired by classic titles such as Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Bit Bot Media co-CEO Joshua Viola also highlighted the game’s connection to the film, describing it as a project that captures the original’s unusual humor and creature-filled aesthetic. Official Steam listing confirms the game’s availability, developers, and pricing.
Frankie Freako is available now on Steam for $6.99. PlayStation and Xbox versions are planned for the end of 2026, while the Nintendo Switch edition is expected in 2027. The game is developed by FreakZone Games, with Bit Bot Media and Raven Banner Releasing involved in the project.
