Disney’s latest original based on Kwame Alexander’s award-winning book, The Crossover, is set to release its first episode this week. Revolving around two brothers, Josh Bell and JB Bell, this coming-of-age series is set to portray their journey as some of the best basketball players from their town.
The novel that goes by the same name was published in March 2014 and became one of the best-selling children’s books. It has been awarded the Coretta Scott King Award and many others for its inspiring storyline packed with emotion. The book would appeal to people who don’t read books often, such as athletes.
Disney came in and decided to turn Kwame Alexander’s book into a series back in 2021. Production began a year later, in 2022, when LeBron James‘ production company joined in on the project. The main protagonists, as well as the supporting actors, were announced in June 2021, and leading roles were to be given to Jalyn Hall and Amir O’Neil.
The Crossover: About The Show
Since the book comprises verses that portray the whole story, the show’s narrator will be Daveed Diggs. Kwame Alexander and Maverick Carter exclusively produce the show. LeBron James will also be involved in the production of the show.
The plot of The Crossover will be centered on the Bell family, which includes the patriarch Chuck Bell, his wife, Crystal Bell, and their two kids, Josh and Joshua (JB) Bell. Both of the Bell twins are great basketball players, which is no surprise considering their father, Chuck, used to be one of the best players of his time. Chuck now works as the coach in their school and ensures their basketball talBasketballt goes to waste.
Crystal Bell has always wanted to pursue her dreams and wants her children to focus on their GPA and the NBA. Crystal is also the principal of their school, which makes some other students blame Josh and JB for using their privileged status to win games. Nonetheless, the boys are talented enough on their own and have a promising future in the sport.
As the episodes continue, we’ll see how their goals and personalities change as they transition from ambitious boys to young adults. Their relationship with Friends, Family, and the sport they love will determine the paths they’ll be taking in the Future. Josh and JB Bell both realize their true dreams as they become adults, which leads to differences between the twins.
The Crossover: The Sports Drama’s Cast
Asides from Jalyn Hall and Amir O’Neil as the protagonists, the show will also feature Derek Luke as Chuck Bell and Sabrina Revelle as Crystall Bell. Skyla I’Lece will be starring as Alexis, while Deja Monique Cruz will be playing the role of Maya. Trevor Rain Bush will portray Vondie.
Since The Crossover is more of a coming-of-age series, it will feature the characters grown up at some point. Himie Freeman will play future Josh’s character, and Darone Okolie will play JB’s. Gabriela Lopez will be Future Maya, and Johnny Cantley will play future Vondie. Other recurring cast members of the series will be Joel Steingold and Yvonne Senat Jones.
