Simon Powell, known for his honest and direct opinions, has commented on Carrie Underwood replacing Katy Perry as a judge on American Idol. Powell, true to his nature, spoke candidly about the change. He believes that judges should express their true feelings both on and off the show.
Despite his bluntness, Powell emphasized that American Idol and Carrie Underwood have a long history. In August 2024, they will mark 20 years together. Powell supports Underwood’s new role, stating that it is a good decision.
In his exclusive interview with E! News, he reflected on Underwood’s journey, saying, “Carrie, we go back a long way. I remember her audition like it was yesterday. She was so good, she’s such a sweet person.”
Powell also shared his perspective on being a judge. He advised Underwood to enjoy her new role, saying, “It’s not that difficult doing this job, I promise you. We all feel the same things and we don’t agree, thank God. Otherwise, life would be boring. And just enjoy it.”
Carrie Underwood Shows Musical Versatility
On August 23, 2024, Carrie Underwood made a surprise appearance at SiriusXM’s Music Row Happy Hour in Las Vegas.
During the event, an interviewer mentioned that Underwood would be the second country artist on the American Idol panel, with Luke Bryan being the other. Underwood quickly responded, stating that although she is well-known for her country music, she has also worked in various other genres.
“I feel like I’ve been so blessed to obviously be so rooted in country music, but I’ve been able to be a part of many other genres of music as well. I mean, I’ve got a song with Papa Roach right now. It’s a lot of fun,” Underwood explained.
She assured fans that her experience in different music styles will help her understand and appreciate various musical approaches. Although Powell advised Underwood to speak her mind, Underwood has stated she will be honest but also kind to the contestants, giving a preview of her approach for the new season.
American Idol Season 23 is scheduled to begin in 2025. Online auditions opened on May 3, 2024, and will continue until October 15, 2024. All previous seasons of the show are available for streaming on Hulu.
