The survival game genre has become increasingly varied, and Pocketpair’s publishing and communications head John “Bucky” Buckley believes it has finally moved beyond a period dominated by forgettable releases. In a recent post on X, Buckley highlighted several successful survival titles while arguing that the genre has reached a stronger position than in previous years.
“What a year for survival gaming,”
Buckley wrote, before pointing to games including Valheim, RuneScape: Dragonwilds, Enshrouded, Dune: Awakening, Core Keeper and Terraria. He added that what was once
“plagued with 100 hit or miss games a year has really found its stride.”
Palworld Publisher Highlights a More Diverse Survival Genre
Buckley’s comments reflect how much the survival genre has expanded beyond the familiar formulas associated with games such as Rust and The Forest. Recent releases have increasingly combined survival mechanics with other genres, settings, and progression systems.
Valheim remains one of the most prominent examples, with its Viking setting and exploration-focused approach continuing to attract players. Meanwhile, Dune: Awakening takes survival mechanics to Arrakis, incorporating the world and mythology of Frank Herbert’s Dune franchise.
Other games demonstrate different approaches to the formula. Enshrouded blends survival mechanics with action RPG elements, while RuneScape: Dragonwilds brings the genre into the long-running MMORPG franchise. Core Keeper and Terraria offer more retro-inspired takes on exploration, crafting, and progression.

As the publishing head of Pocketpair, Buckley naturally included Palworld among the notable games in the space. The creature-collecting survival game has become one of the genre’s biggest successes, helping demonstrate how survival mechanics can be combined with other recognizable gameplay ideas.
Buckley later acknowledged that he had also overlooked Windrose, another survival title published by Pocketpair. Its inclusion further underlines the growing variety within the genre.
The comments suggest that survival games are increasingly finding their own identities rather than simply repeating established formulas. With major releases continuing to experiment with different settings and mechanics, the genre appears to have entered a particularly strong period of growth.
