It is no secret that The Addams Family has reigned the hearts of people, especially horror comedy enthusiasts, for not merely years but decades.
To be precise, they have been one of the leading supernatural concepts that have been on television, dramatized for movies and animated as well, with the original show being aired in 1964 and then reimagined as a show in 1998.
The show and the movies are originally based on the characters of the fictional Addams family created by the American cartoonist Charles Addams. He created a set of macabre and spooky characters with an unusual lifestyle which became highly popular among the viewers as this was something that no one had seen prior.
In the year 1991, the story was turned into a movie with Christina Ricci playing the lead role of Wednesday Addams and Anjelica Hutson portraying Morticia Addams. The movie can be streamed on Amazon Prime.
But the story had yet to see one more edition of the story with a modern twist with Netflix releasing the series named ‘Wednesday,’ which is also based upon the Addams Family but is reimagined with Wednesday taking on a more centric and prominent role.
The show was released on November 23rd, 2022, and it has been gaining more and more popularity each day which adds to the success of the show. The show has a total of eight episodes, each with a 50-minute average running time.
The show was created by Alfred Gough and Miles Miller and produced by Carmen Pepelea. The show stars Jenna Ortega, the well-known Disney face of Wednesday Addams, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, Gwendoline Christie as Larrissa Weems, and Riki Lindhome as Dr. Valerie Kinbott.
The show is a supernatural horror comedy that, unlike the older releases, isn’t based more on black comedy but rather on coming-of-age themes.
To many people who didn’t notice, Christina Ricci, who portrayed the role of Wednesday Addams in the 1991 movie, also is in the movie playing the role of Marilyn Thornhill, a botany teacher and also the dorm mom of Wednesdays and Enid. The show, within three weeks of its release, became the second most-watched English show, and the numbers are still rolling in.
What are Wednesday’s superpowers?
The character of Wednesday is a quirky and peculiar sixteen-year-old who has the most different ways of expressing herself, whether it be her happiness, coldness, or anger. She is known for her all-black gothic dressing style, adorned with two pigtails, pale skin as her hairstyle, and bangs with cold and questioning expressions.
After dumping flesh-eating piranha’s in the school’s pool in order to take revenge on the boys who bullied and humiliated her brother, she gets suspended.
Understanding that she is different from most of the kids her age, her parents Morticia and Gomez, enroll her in the Nevermore Academy, which is a high school for the monstrous outcasts who doesn’t seem to fit anywhere. Her cold and distant nature makes it hard for her to be a part of any social circle and make friends.
But soon, she discovers that she is gifted with a superpower and realizes that she is a Psychic. A Psychic is a person who has the ability to see the future through visions, and even, in some cases, they can see the past as well. As in the case of Wednesday, she can see both the future and the past of people.
She had inherited this gift from her mother, Morticia, who is also a Psychic. As she navigates through how to cope with her visions, she helps in solving a local murder case with the help of her abilities. She has the ability to get glimpses of the past and the future, and that can only happen when she touches someone that, ultimately, triggers a vision.
She is shown to have no control over her powers and is trying to comprehend and understand what they really are and how they can be used. This enables her to become an integral part of the investigation that is ongoing for a local crime which she solves successfully through her visions.
