Orbitals is set to launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 next month, and developer Shapefarm has explained why Nintendo’s latest console was chosen as the home for its cooperative multiplayer game.
According to game director Jakob Lundgren, the console’s GameShare feature was a major reason for the decision, as it allows players to share access to the game while playing together.
Speaking in an interview published by Nintendo, Lundgren explained that Orbitals was designed with cooperative play in mind, making Switch 2’s GameShare functionality particularly useful. The feature allows players to play together without requiring everyone in the group to purchase their own copy.
“When you play a game like this, if you play it locally, you only have to buy one game,”
Lundgren said. He added that Shapefarm wanted the same principle to work for online multiplayer, describing GameShare as “the perfect fit” for Orbitals.
The feature has reportedly also become part of the game’s development process. Lundgren revealed that the team regularly uses GameShare while testing Orbitals, even joking that developers sometimes use another console when a controller isn’t immediately available.
With Orbitals built specifically for cooperative multiplayer and arriving exclusively on Switch 2, Shapefarm appears to be taking advantage of a feature that directly supports the game’s central concept.
