Ghost of Yōtei has earned an Excellence Award in the Sound Division at the CEDEC Awards 2026, one of Japan’s most prestigious honors recognizing achievements in game development.

Announced during the ceremony at Pacifico Yokohama on July 23, the PlayStation 5 game was recognized for its exceptional sound design, with judges highlighting how its carefully crafted audio enhances both storytelling and gameplay.

The recognition places Ghost of Yōtei among several standout projects celebrated by developers at this year’s conference. While Nintendo’s Nintendo Music went on to win the Sound Division Grand Award, Sucker Punch Productions received an Excellence Award for creating an immersive audio experience that complements the game’s historical setting and cinematic presentation.

Meticulous sound design helps Ghost of Yōtei stand out

According to the CEDEC Awards committee, Ghost of Yōtei was recognized for

“sound design where every element is carefully crafted, amplifying the story and play experience.”

The award acknowledges the game’s comprehensive approach to audio, from environmental ambience and music to the subtle sounds that strengthen immersion throughout the adventure.

Accepting the award on behalf of the development team, Audio Director Bradley Meyer thanked the organizers despite being unable to attend the ceremony in person. Meyer described Ghost of Yōtei as

“a period drama we poured our love into making,”

adding that the team meticulously crafted every aspect of the game’s soundscape, including environmental audio and background music.

“We are honored to receive your recognition,”

Meyer said while thanking PlayStation, Arrival UK, and the studio’s internal audio team for their contributions.

Ghost of Yōtei serves as the standalone successor to Ghost of Tsushima, with Sucker Punch introducing a new protagonist and a fresh setting centered around Mount Yōtei in Hokkaido. The game has attracted attention for its visual fidelity and historical atmosphere, and the CEDEC recognition further highlights the importance of its audio design in delivering an immersive samurai experience.

Although the title did not receive the Sound Division Grand Award, earning an Excellence Award at CEDEC reinforces Sucker Punch Productions’ reputation for combining cinematic storytelling with high-quality technical craftsmanship, making Ghost of Yōtei one of the industry’s most anticipated releases.
