Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance Could Fix the Base Game by Making Hunts Harder, Improving Seikret, and Expanding Weather Options

Capcom's upcoming expansion has an opportunity to address some of Monster Hunter Wilds' biggest gameplay criticisms while building on the improvements introduced through post-launch updates.

Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds enjoyed a strong launch in 2025, becoming one of the franchise’s fastest-selling entries. While post-launch updates introduced new monsters, endgame activities, and performance improvements, many longtime players still believe the base game’s campaign lacks the challenge and depth found in previous Monster Hunter titles.

With Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance scheduled for release in 2027, expectations are growing that the expansion will refine the experience instead of focusing solely on new content.

Several community discussions have highlighted areas where the expansion could improve the game, including combat balance, exploration mechanics, and environmental customization. These suggestions were recently compiled by Windows Central in a feature discussing the expansion’s potential, although the ideas represent community wishlists rather than confirmed Capcom plans.

A more challenging campaign could improve the hunting experience

One of the most common criticisms surrounding Monster Hunter Wilds is that its Low Rank and early High Rank quests are significantly easier than previous entries in the series. Thanks to mechanics like Focus Strikes and frequent Wound opportunities, many monsters can be defeated quickly without requiring players to fully engage with the preparation and strategy that have traditionally defined Monster Hunter.

Many players hope Ascendance introduces balance changes that make monsters tougher throughout the main campaign. Harder-hitting enemies with increased durability would encourage hunters to upgrade equipment more frequently, learn monster attack patterns, and carefully prepare before each hunt instead of relying on aggressive attacks alone.

Reducing how often Wounds appear could also make Focus Strikes feel more rewarding, reserving powerful knockdowns for well-timed opportunities rather than constant damage windows.

Seikret and weather systems could receive meaningful improvements

Another mechanic frequently discussed by the community is the Seikret, Monster Hunter Wilds’ mount. While it greatly improves exploration across the game’s larger maps, some players feel it removes too much danger from combat by allowing hunters to escape difficult situations too easily.

One suggestion is introducing a cooldown or stamina system that limits emergency Seikret summons during battles. Others have proposed certain powerful monsters temporarily preventing Seikret usage altogether, forcing players to rely on traditional defensive mechanics such as dodging, blocking, or positioning.

The game’s dynamic weather system has also divided opinion. Although Plenty, Fallow, and Inclemency weather states create more dynamic environments, many players prefer the brighter visuals of Plenty and would like the option to permanently select a weather state while still encountering every monster, including Apex creatures.

The recently revealed Boost Bracer mechanic shown in the Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance trailer already suggests Capcom is expanding combat by introducing new weapon abilities. While the developer has yet to detail the expansion’s full feature set, many fans hope it will also revisit the game’s core progression systems alongside adding Master Rank content.

Capcom has not confirmed any of these gameplay changes, but with Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance positioned as the game’s first major expansion, players are hoping it delivers more than additional monsters. A stronger campaign, better combat balance, and greater player customization could help grow Wilds into one of the franchise’s most complete entries when the expansion launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2027.
