Nicola Benedetti was born on 20 July 1987 in Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland. Her father is Italian, and her mother half-Italian half-Scottish. With lessons from Brenda Smith, she started to play the violin at the age of four.
She first performed in Holyrood Palace in the presence of Prince Edward in 1999 for the anniversary celebration. In 2001 she performed a concerto for The Prince again with the London Mozart Players at St. James’s Palace. She has also won the UK’s Brilliant Prodigy Competition in 2002. In 2003 she was brought in as soloist for the recording of a DVD titled Barbie of Swan Lake at Abbey Road Studios by the London Symphony Orchestra.
In 2004 she performed Karol Szymanowski’s First violin Concerto in the final of BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition at Usher Hall, Edinburgh, which landed her first prize. Then next year BBC Young Musician of the Year led her to the Top Scot award.

She plays a 304 years old violin named 1717 “Gariel” Stradivarius, which was lent to her by Jonathan Moulds, who is a London banker and also a board member of the London Symphony Orchestra in 2012. This violin is worth £10 million. Benedetti has said that she still does not own it and doesn’t see herself ever affording it. She takes care of this violin very much by taking it to the violin restorer at least every month.
