Game of Thrones is expanding with several new spinoff series, but only House of the Dragon has been released so far. That will soon change. House of the Dragon Season 2 is finished, and the next show in the franchise will be A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This new series will fill the gap between House of the Dragon seasons.
HBO’s new trailer for upcoming series shows Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). While it is set in Westeros, it connects deeply with the other stories, especially after House of the Dragon’s Season 2 finale.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be a prequel to Game of Thrones and a sequel to House of the Dragon. It is based on George R. R. Martin’s novellas and takes place roughly 80 years after House of the Dragon. This might suggest some crossover possibilities, as some younger characters could still be alive.
However, the violence of war makes this unlikely. Still, with the connections between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, some overlap between the two series is expected.
The finale of House of the Dragon’s Season 2 introduced a character who appears during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, indicating possible connections between the shows.
What Effect Will “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” Have on “House of the Dragon’s Story”?
Much about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms remains unknown, but if it follows the novellas closely, it will shift focus from political conflicts to the life of a simple hedge knight named Dunk. Dunk travels the Seven Kingdoms helping where needed and becomes a squire to a young Targaryen prince, Aegon, or “Egg.”
Their adventures will show a different side of the world beyond Targaryen strongholds, though there will still be familiar families. Egg, as the main Targaryen character, will be linked to House of the Dragon, being only five generations removed from Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Daemon (Matt Smith).
Additional Targaryens like Maekar (Sam Spruell), Aerion “Brightflame” (Finn Bennett), and Baelor “Breakspear” (Bertie Carvel) are cast in the new series. Dunk is from Flea Bottom, but other characters will include familiar families like Ser Lyonel Baratheon (Daniel Ings), who appeared in House of the Dragon. It is expected that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will feature more familiar families.
Since the two series are so close in time, the events of House of the Dragon will still be fresh during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
The civil war between Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) and Rhaenyra has lasting effects, creating division among Westeros people. While this war may not be the most divisive, it will likely be referenced, as the realm will soon face the first Blackfyre Rebellion.
The Dance of the Dragons marks the start of the dragons’ decline. Although dragons can live for centuries, the earlier show’s events led to their near extinction. This left the Targaryens vulnerable but still in control during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
The Season 2 finale of House of the Dragon hints at a deeper connection to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Daemon’s vision includes a character likely to appear in the new series. This character, sitting under a tree, is described as Bloodraven (Joshua Ben-Tovim), a bastard Targaryen alive during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Although A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms does not focus on politics as much, Bloodraven’s presence might connect all three shows. Bloodraven appeared as the Three-Eyed Raven (Struan Rodger and Max von Sydow) in Game of Thrones, training Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright).
His role in House of the Dragon suggests he might link to the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy from Aegon I. This prophecy is crucial for the events of Game of Thrones.
Bloodraven could preserve this knowledge, adding importance to his role in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. With only limited details available, these connections are already significant and may grow stronger.
Both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are available for streaming on Max in the U.S., with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms set to debut in 2025.
