The Japanese manga series Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari is written and illustrated by Onigunsou. Originally serialized in Shueisha’s seinen manga magazine Miracle Jump between April 2014 and December 2015, the series was later adapted into an anime television series by Bandai Namco Pictures.
Anime television series adaptations of the series were announced in November 2021. Bandai Namco Pictures produced it with scripts written by Keiichi Kimura, character designs handled by Shiori Fujisawa, and music by John Kanda and XELIK. True will play the ending theme song “Rebind,” while Arcana Project will perform the opening theme song “Koigoromo.”
The plot of the anime revolves around when spirits enter the physical realm and take on a physical form, or Tsukumogami. The Saenome clan peacefully aids in returning those Tsukumogami to the spirit world to prevent destruction. The Saenome clan aids Tsukumogami in quietly crossing over into the spirit realm to save them from annihilation because they can be either compassionate or violent or somewhere in between.
Despite being a member of the clan, Kunato Hyouma isn’t very serene because a Tsukumogami took something vital from him. Hyouma’s grandfather, worried that his impulsive rage could cause supernatural disasters, sends him to live in Kyoto with Nagatsuki Botan, a weird young woman who genuinely lives with Tsukumogami as family. When confronted with Tsukumogami, can Hyouma maintain emotional control, or is he destined to spend the rest of his life being consumed by his rage?
