Matty (Kathy Bates) has made some risky choices in the past few weeks. She let her strong loyalty to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) cloud her judgment, which created serious challenges at work.
The Wellbrexa case has already pushed her into difficult situations, and she has not always made the best decisions. However, in this episode, she regains control and strengthens her defense.
Matty realizes that her ongoing rivalry with Shae Banfield (Yael Grobglas) needs to be handled carefully. Instead of reacting emotionally, she starts thinking ahead and builds a solid strategy to counter Shae’s tactics. Shae, known as the “human lie detector,” has been a problem for Matty. This time, Matty fights back with precision.
At first, it seems that Matty manages to corner Shae. However, things are never that simple. By outmaneuvering one opponent, Matty might have attracted an even greater threat.
As the season moves forward, Matty must act quickly. Someone is hiding crucial documents, and if she does not uncover the truth soon, she might lose control of the situation.

A Tech Entrepreneur Brings a New Case to Matlock
This week’s case connects closely to Matty’s ongoing struggles. Christopher Gorham guest-stars as Ben, a wealthy tech entrepreneur concerned about climate change. His goal is to eliminate a competitor in the rain-creation industry. Senior (Beau Bridges) assigns Olympia the task of bringing Ben in as a permanent client.
Olympia works with the always-competitive YouThree team to impress Ben. During the investigation, she uncovers a shocking truth—Ben has been leaking his own intellectual property. His plan is to sue and destroy his competition, giving himself full control of the industry.
Olympia presents the evidence, and the case is resolved. Ben agrees to work with the firm permanently if Olympia handles his future legal matters. Senior is pleased with the outcome, but it does not guarantee Olympia’s victory in the ongoing battle to become a full partner. Julian (Jason Ritter) remains her biggest competitor, and the fight for the partner position is far from over.
Olympia’s success in this case gives her an advantage, but she still has a long way to go before securing her position in the firm.
Sarah and Shae Team Up Against Matty
Matty faces a serious challenge when Sarah (Leah Lewis) decides to seek revenge. Matty previously betrayed Sarah while dealing with the decoy recording pen in Billy’s (David Del Rio) office. Sarah does not forgive easily, and she returns this week determined to destroy Matty. She teams up with Shae, and together, they form a strong opposition.
This episode brings the kind of tension that makes Shae such an interesting character. While her past conflict with Julian is not very important, her impact on Matty’s Wellbrexa case is significant. With Sarah’s determination and Shae’s ability to detect deception, they create a powerful threat.
Matty understands the danger and acts swiftly. She and Edwin set a trap for Shae, tricking her into traveling to Georgia. Shae believes she is meeting one of Matty’s former colleagues to gather information. Instead, Edwin (Sam Anderson), disguised as someone else, praises Matty and reinforces her credibility.
This trick gives Matty the proof she needs to file an official HR complaint against Shae. As a result, Shae is forced to back off.
Meanwhile, Billy confronts Sarah for being too focused on revenge. He points out that her obsession with Matty distracted her from considering whether he was actually the better lawyer for the case. Sarah tries to make amends, but Billy refuses to accept it.
Sarah may have lost her partnership with YouThree, but she finds a new opportunity. She convinces Olympia to mentor her, though Olympia is not entirely happy about it. Despite her reluctance, Olympia agrees, and Sarah is thrilled about the arrangement. This new mentorship keeps Sarah occupied, making it less likely that she will continue investigating Matty.
Matty Faces a New Threat
Matty successfully defends herself against Sarah and Shae, but her troubles are far from over. The HR complaint reaches Senior’s desk, and he decides to check in on Matty. His real motive is clear—he likes Shae, and he is unhappy that Matty reported her.
Even though Shae steps back for now, Senior’s involvement creates a new problem. Matty must be cautious because having Senior as an enemy could be even more dangerous than dealing with Shae.
Meanwhile, Edwin uncovers valuable information during his meeting with Shae. He learns that she worked in marketing before joining Jacobson Moore. This revelation leads him and Matty to suspect that the missing documents are connected to a past marketing campaign. They believe the campaign played a role in flooding the market with opioids.
Now, Shae is no longer just an opponent. She could be the key to unlocking the truth behind the Wellbrexa case.
A Secret Investigation Begins
Matty and Edwin have not been completely in sync lately. Their disagreements started after Matty had a panic attack, and things became worse when she refused to investigate Olympia further.
Their latest disagreement revolves around Alfie (Aaron D. Harris), their grandson. Matty wants to find Alfie’s biological father as a backup guardian, but Edwin strongly disagrees.
Instead of arguing, Edwin decides to act on his own. He lies to Matty about receiving an email from a “friend” of their late daughter. The truth is, he is preparing to conduct his own secret investigation.
This deception could lead to serious consequences. If Matty finds out, their partnership might suffer. However, Edwin seems determined to move forward with his plan.
A breakthrough in the Wellbrexa case is coming soon, but Matty may not be prepared for what she will uncover. She has regained her confidence, but her blind spots throughout the season could cause unexpected complications.
What’s Next for Matlock?
Matty has shown her strength and determination in this episode, but new threats continue to emerge. Shae may have been dealt with for now, but Senior’s disapproval could become a major issue. Edwin’s secret investigation could also lead to trouble.
As the season progresses, Matty must stay sharp. If she does not figure out the truth behind the Wellbrexa case soon, she may find herself in deeper trouble than ever before. Watch Matlock on Thursdays at 9 PM on CBS. Episodes are available for streaming the next day on Paramount+.
