Pocketpair communications and publishing lead John Buckley has revealed that he would have considered 200,000 concurrent players a major success for Palworld 1.0. Instead, the full release climbed to approximately 960,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, massively exceeding the studio’s expectations.
Speaking at Gamescom, Buckley said the response had been “very life changing for the studio.” The number was especially surprising because Palworld was sitting at around 45,000 concurrent players on Steam before the 1.0 launch, making its sudden resurgence even more remarkable.
Palworld 1.0 Attracts Far More Players Than Pocketpair Expected
Buckley explained that Pocketpair expected returning players who had not played the game for years to check out the 1.0 update. However, the studio was surprised by the large number of new players who also joined the game.
“Personally, I was like, if we can hit about 200k, it’s a crazy CCU. 200k, that’d be party time. And again, it’s five times that,”
Buckley said.

The Palworld team had previously described the game’s Early Access success as “supernatural,” with Buckley admitting that the scale of its original popularity was difficult to explain. Pocketpair therefore, did not expect the full 1.0 launch to generate a similar explosion in player numbers.
The studio is now looking to expand the franchise beyond the main survival game. Buckley pointed to projects including Palworld: Palfarm and a third-party Palworld MMO, saying the goal is to create different experiences for different types of players.
“I think the end goal is not that there’s a Palworld for everyone, but a Palworld for lots of people,”
Buckley said. Pocketpair’s continued expansion suggests that the studio sees the massive 1.0 response as an opportunity to turn Palworld into a broader franchise.
