The high-fantasy adventure Korean series is about a fictional world where masters and slaves clash in epic uprisings. Arthdal Chronicles might be finished after only two seasons separated four years from each other. Today, we plan on exploring whether or not Arthdal Chronicles is finished.
Developed by Kim Won Seok and Park Sang Yeon, Arthdal Chronicles takes inspiration from the Dangun period, a moment in Korean history when the first Kingdom (Gojoseon) was formed.
With excellent scriptwriting, great special effects, and strong character development, the film took quite its time to release seasons one and two. Still, despite the wait, it was one of the most successful Korean dramas in the United States, but as with all good things, some of them come to an end. And in the case of Arthdal, we’re going to explore its fate.
What Has Happened With Arthdal Chronicles So Far?
Season 2 of Arthdal Chronicles takes place about a decade after season 1. Arthdal suppressed the enormous revolt of the tribes killed by Ta Gon in Season 1 over eight years.
After two centuries under Eunseom, the Agos reunited 30 clans. Ta-Gon’s Kingdom of Arthdal and Eunseom’s Ago Union will fight a major war in Season 2. Tanya is the Wahan clan’s successor, and Eunseom rules the East.
Who will survive? That’s the kind of thing we expect to see solved in a potential third season of Arthdal Chronicles, but there are many obstacles for the audience to see this sort of thing happen, and we will unpack those further down the line.
The final episode of Arthdal Chronicles’s sophomore season dropped on 22 October 2023. Now, things get even more complex because there are a lot of factors that we need to unpack to open, ponder, and consider even the slightest possibility of seeing a third Arthdal Chronicles take place.
Is Arthdal Chronicles Finished?
By the time of print, there’s no official information as to whether or not we will see a third season of the Korean high-fantasy series Arthdal Chronicles.
There are several things we need to consider to make a speculative ruling on whether or not Arthdal Chronicles is finished: From actors saying goodbye, the dilated hiatus between seasons, to traditional Korean show running, ratings, and other things, let’s go one by one to see what’s going on here.
Firstly, it is ratings; depending on how the show does ratings-wise, the producers might want to consider a third run. Then, there’s the schedule for the cast if they are willing to do another one. Then, there’s another cultural aspect we need to examine, and that’s the fact that Korean series seldom see more than one run —unless they’re on Netflix, that’s different.
If we see how the stars of the show —which took four years between seasons one and two— reacted to the release of the final episode, and that is with a heartfelt “goodbye,” things look bleak for season three. Take, for example, how Lee Joon Gi thanked the cast, director, and crew for the fun times she had playing Eun Seom and Saya.
That’s not the only cast member saying goodbye. Shin Se Kyung, who played Tan Ya, also posted on social media how happy and fun times they had when shooting season two.
As such, it is likely improbable that Arthdal Chronicles will continue for a third season. Hope isn’t lost because there’s always a possibility for a third run, or in any case, as a consolation prize, the producers could develop a sequel or a spinoff.
To sum things up, it is very likely that Arthdal Chronicles is finished despite its unfinished plotlines with Prince Arok and the Queen, as well as Neanthal and Saya. But that’s just how scriptwriting and managerial decisions go when it comes to these kinds of shows.
It’s sad to see such good shows say goodbye, but rest assured that with the kind of talent from filmmakers, showrunners, actors, and producers, there will be many more productions worthy of our attention coming our way, especially from a country like Korea, whose knack for churning out shows of every genre and style with great quality is something we can all expect.
