The monster-hunting competition took an unexpected turn when Deon was attacked by assassins hiding within the wilderness. Deon planned to act like he would subjugate monsters, but in reality, he intended to dispose of the plant he got as a gift from Demon King’s Palace’s gardner Hein.
He had tried killing the plant several times before, but the plant always survived. And when his life suddenly was threatened, it was the plan that saved him. It took care of all the assassins and then killed itself to avoid arousing suspicion.
For some context, I’m Not That Kind of Talent follows the life of Deom Hardt. He was a member of the Demon King subjugation team for the Empire. Because of his weak composition, he was told to stay behind while the main party went to confront the demon king. Deon was charged with reporting back to the empire no matter what the outcome of their battle would be. Under no circumstances was he to interfere.
But as luck would have it, he found himself between the Demon King and the dying hero. With that last of his power, he tried to transfer his abilities to Deon.
The hero collapses after leading the demon king to believe that Deon killed him. He asked Deon what his name was, and he misheard it as “Demon Arut.” The tale of Demon Arut spread long and wide among demon-kind. If only they knew the truth of things.
Deon’s situation is very similar to that of King from One Punch Man. Everyone believes him to be strong, and all his so-called feats of strength are because of accidents and pure luck. Since everyone believes that Deon took down the Plant Monster, they applauded him. The Emperor even awarded him the first prize in the monster hunting competition. But what followed was a shock to everyone there.
