Maybe We Broke Up: The Plot
The movie introduces the two characters first as a couple who have been together since their college days and now stand at a point where getting married to each other is the only step left. Jun Ho is apparently preparing to be a public officer, for which he has to sit for an exam, while Ah Young wanted to be an artist but had to give up on her dream so she could cheer for her boyfriend and be the breadwinner till he gets on his two feet and starts taking care of her.
We find that Jun Ho has actually taken the exam quite a few times but has not succeeded, and every time Jun Ho failed, Ah Young was forced to continue her job as a real estate agent to earn for the two, not getting to pursue her own dream. The fact that Jun Ho was even getting the chance to try to achieve his dream so many times that he could try again and again to achieve that dream, whereas Ah Young could not even try to take a step towards her dream and had to work a job must have created a crack in their relationship.
It is this one time Jun Ho forgets to throw the trash out that the two get into a fight that finally brings out all of Ah Young’s pent-up feelings and disappointment. What starts as a small argument over trash turns into a big fight where Ah Young takes her time, finally saying all that she wanted to say over the years of giving up on her dream and watching Jun Ho try to achieve his.
While Jun Ho realizes where Ah Young is coming from and even understands her frustration, the part where Ah Young tells him that she feels that he is not even working that hard to study and pass the exam but instead is wasting his own and her time, hurts him so much that he stops himself from apologizing. His ego gets in the way, and Ah Young suggests breaking up.
We skip a year and find Jun Ho dating some girl that his friends set him up with, and Ah Young is also moved on from her past and seems to have settled well with the man of her dreams, a guy who earns well and also spends time with her and cares for her. It is Ah Young who gets into contact with Jun Ho, asking for her iPad to be returned. The two agree to meet in person, and this becomes the start of the next phase of their relationship.
The two are forced to look back at life, resolve their issues and pent-up emotions, and try to deal with life as mature adults who probably were not meant to be together forever.
