Hidden Love is a Chinese romance drama that has taken inspiration from a Chinese web novel called ‘Secretly, Secretly, But Unable To Hide It’. The show, with its heart-fluttering story and swoon-worthy chemistry between the leads, has managed to have a strong hold on its fans. With the direction of Lee Ching Jung and screenplay writer Shen Fei Xian, the romance series seems to be fairing well among fans.
The show has cast actress Zhao Lu Si for the role of Sang Zhi and actor Chen Zhe Yuan for the role of Duan Xia Ju. Other cast members in the show include Victor Ma, Zeng Li, Qui Xin Li, Guan Zi Jing, Wang Yang, and many others who contribute greatly to the show. The series is a classic romance story with a small yet fierce female lead who is the typical ‘goody-two shoes’ and a male lead who is considerate, warm protective of our female lead.
The story explores the theme of an age gap between couples and is overall more about self-discovery and acceptance and, thus, feels wholesome and leaves you feeling warm and cozy.
Hidden Love: The Plot
We start the story with a young Sang Zhi, completely smitten by one of his older brother’s best friends, Duan Xia Ju, who comes over to their house to play. Young Sang Zhi is obsessed with him, and she is all about trying to woo him and get time to marry her so that the two can have a happy future together.
Even as a kid, Duan Xia Ju did not really reciprocate Sang Zhi’s feelings, and he realized that he was seven years older than the latter and saw her only as his best buddy’s younger sister, who seemed weirdly stalker-ish. The story gets kicked off further after a long time-lapse, where we see that Sang Zhi has grown into a beautiful, mature, and intelligent woman ready to enter university.
Duan Xia Ju is also a university student and happens to be studying at the same university as her. Obviously, Sang Zhi has moved on in life and is over the silly feelings she had for the former, or is she really? Being in the same university, the two end up bumping and recognizing each other, finally getting in touch after so many years.
The two are excited and happy to meet each other, but there is also a strange tension between them. Keeping in mind their age difference, the two tread carefully while exploring their own selves, the relationship they share, and what they want for the future. The show does not just revolve around their relationship, from being friends to becoming a couple, but it is also about how the two grow and enter the adult world together.
