House of the Dragon ended its third season with 21 million viewers in its first three days, keeping the Game of Thrones prequel near the same level of audience engagement it has maintained throughout the season. More than 11 million viewers were in the United States, according to figures reported by Variety.
The figure combines Nielsen’s measurements for linear HBO viewing with Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming data from HBO Max. That makes the finale’s three-day result only about 2% below the 21.5 million viewers recorded by the Season 3 premiere, showing relatively stable demand across the season.
House of the Dragon Season 3 Maintains Strong Viewership
While HBO has not released three-day figures for Episodes 2 through 7 or provided a directly comparable three-day total for the Season 2 finale, Season 3 has maintained a strong average. The third season is averaging approximately 34 million viewers per episode, only slightly below Season 2’s 35 million average.

HBO says that the performance places House of the Dragon among HBO Max’s three most-watched returning seasons ever. The result also reinforces the series’ position as one of the company’s biggest ongoing fantasy properties following the success of Game of Thrones.
The Season 3 finale aired Sunday, August 9, bringing the latest chapter of the Targaryen civil war to a close. With HBO already preparing the series for its remaining story, the latest audience numbers provide another indication that the franchise continues to command a substantial audience.
The strong performance also came alongside the conclusion of Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, whose seven-episode first season is averaging around 4 million U.S. viewers per episode. HBO says the Larry David comedy is the second-most-watched comedy launch in HBO Max history, behind Steve Carell’s Rooster.
