Netflix is reportedly moving away from David Fincher’s long-discussed Squid Game spinoff, marking a significant shift in the streaming giant’s strategy for one of its biggest global franchises. Although the project was never officially announced by Netflix, it had been widely reported over the past two years that the acclaimed filmmaker was developing an English-language expansion of the Korean survival drama.
According to an exclusive report from The Playlist, sources close to the production say the project, reportedly operating under the working title Heckler, is no longer moving forward. The report suggests Netflix has changed its long-term plans for the franchise after several years of development and internal executive changes.

The English-language series was first reported in 2024, with Dennis Kelly, creator of the British drama Utopia, attached as writer. While many fans speculated that Cate Blanchett’s surprise appearance as an American recruiter in the Squid Game finale was teasing Fincher’s project, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk previously denied any direct connection.
According to The Playlist, Netflix now appears to be exploring a different international strategy rather than centering its expansion around a single English-language adaptation. The report notes that country-specific projects could become a greater priority, although no additional series have been officially announced.
The report also states there is no indication Blanchett was ever attached to Fincher’s version despite fan speculation following her cameo.
With the reported cancellation of Heckler, Fincher’s attention remains on The Adventures of Cliff Booth, Netflix’s follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The Playlist reports that the film is currently undergoing additional photography starring Brad Pitt, with longtime Fincher collaborator Jeff Cronenweth replacing cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt for the reshoots due to scheduling conflicts.
Netflix has not publicly commented on the report, meaning the status of the rumored Squid Game project remains unofficial. Until the company provides confirmation, the information should be treated as a report rather than an official cancellation.
