Heartland Season 17 – Recap
The comedy series focuses on the two sisters, Amy and Lou, living at a ranch with Jack, their grandfather, and going through lives together in Alberta. Amy inherited her mother’s power to heal damaged and abused horses after an accident that led to significant changes in the lead character’s life.
The series starts with Amy, a 15-year-old girl with a serious love for horses growing up in Alberta, convincing her mother to rescue Sparton, an abused horse.
The first episode of the seventeenth season starts with Amy and Logan working with a wild horse at the ranch when a truck driven by Mallory arrives there. Avery-pregnant Mallory seeks help from Amy and Logan after she starts to experience light contractions, and the pair take her to a nearby hospital, with Amy asking her permission to call Jake.
On the way to the hospital, the two get talking, and Amy soon realizes that Ransom, a wild horse brought by Mallory to the ranch the same morning, might not be the sole reason behind her visit. Meanwhile, Logan tries to work with Ransom at the ranch while Lou struggles with Rick, a well-known rival, and his demand to run for election against her.
Mallory soon realizes that her contractions were nothing but Braxton hicks, and she wasn’t in labor. Mallory still needed Amy and Logan’s help in assistance with Ransom as she and Jake weren’t sure about their next step with the horse. Mallory desired for Amy to integrate Ransom with the other wild horses in Heartland, as he was once a wild horse before being returned to her and Jake.
The real reason behind Mallory’s return turns out to be her feeling of missing the bustle of ranch activities and being scared of motherhood, but she soon realizes that her home is where Jake and their son are. Mallory and Jake return to Colorado after Amy gives birth to her baby in the back of T’s old truck. Meanwhile, Amy fulfills Mallory’s request to incorporate Ransom with the wild horses.
Meanwhile, Tim gets worried that his and Nathan Price’s partnership with Crown Shoppers would force Heartland Beef out of business. Lou and Rick fail to get along throughout the first episode because even though Rick wants to maintain a friendship with her, Lou has none of it as she is offended by Rick’s decision to challenge her, and the lead in votes he had didn’t help.
During her interview at the radio station, Lou praises Rick and wins back her old friend by not tainting his image in public for her benefit. The first episode ends with a discussion of the sale of Sam’s quarter of land to Tim and Jack’s rival, as Sam found it difficult to turn down the offered price.
The second episode witnessed Amy and Jack retraining Edwin’s horse for carriage racing, which brought Amy closer to Edwin and tightened their bond. Amy and Caleb also begin to grow closer to each other, hinting towards a romantic relationship between the two. Meanwhile, Logan rides and trains his first client’s horse, and on election night, the family faces a difficult loss.
The episode also witnesses the pair of Jack and Mallory return along with Shane’s return. Tim and Jack continue to face difficulties as the average they wanted was sold by Sam to their rival, and they weren’t able to do anything to deter his decision.
