Rockstar Games made an unusual marketing move for Grand Theft Auto VI by choosing Netflix as the first home for its latest gameplay presentation. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix on August 27, giving subscribers access to roughly 27 minutes of gameplay captured entirely on PlayStation 5 before the footage was released elsewhere.

The presentation offered an extended look at Vice City, as well as protagonists Jason and Lucia and their criminal partnership. With GTA 6 scheduled to launch on November 19, the collaboration also highlighted Netflix’s increasingly ambitious attempts to establish itself as part of the broader gaming ecosystem.

Why Rockstar Chose Netflix for GTA 6

Major game publishers traditionally use events such as Gamescom, Summer Game Fest, or their own digital showcases to reveal new gameplay. Rockstar instead partnered with Netflix, creating a rare crossover between the world’s biggest entertainment franchises and a streaming audience that extends well beyond dedicated gamers.

Netflix Vice President Brandon Riegg described the partnership as part of the company’s broader entertainment ambitions, saying,

“Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right.”

He added that Netflix was honored to debut the next part of the series for its members first.

The strategy appears to have generated substantial attention. The GTA 6 presentation quickly reached the upper levels of Netflix’s global movie viewing charts, while reports indicated increased traffic and engagement around the platform following its premiere. Forbes reported that the special reached No. 1 on Netflix’s Top 10 movie list and cited analytics showing a significant increase in web traffic during the release period.

For Rockstar, Netflix provides an opportunity to present GTA 6 directly to millions of people who may not regularly follow gaming showcases or video game news. The partnership therefore works as more than a conventional trailer launch, placing a major game reveal inside a platform already used for movies and television.

GTA 6 Could Help Netflix’s Gaming Ambitions

The partnership also fits into Netflix’s longer-term push into interactive entertainment. The company launched its mobile gaming service in 2021 and has since expanded its plans toward making games available on televisions and other devices. Netflix has described its broader goal as making games easier for members to access across different screens.

That strategy has continued to expand, with Netflix introducing games directly through compatible TVs and positioning gaming alongside its traditional film and television offerings.

The GTA 6 presentation demonstrates another potential use for that ecosystem: using Netflix not only to distribute games but also as a global promotional platform for major gaming properties. Whether other publishers follow Rockstar’s approach remains uncertain, but the response gives Netflix another example of how its enormous entertainment audience can intersect with the video game industry.

With Grand Theft Auto VI arriving on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, the Netflix experiment could become one of the most closely watched examples of gaming and streaming platforms working together.
