Netflix saw a major surge in engagement during the premiere of Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, highlighting the enormous anticipation surrounding Rockstar Games’ upcoming open-world blockbuster. According to data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, the August 27 event caused significant increases across both Netflix’s mobile app and web platform.

The biggest jump came from Netflix’s web users in the United States, which increased by more than 125% during the 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET reveal compared with the average for the same period across the previous 12 Thursdays. Mobile app users also climbed by nearly 50% during the presentation.

GTA VI Extended Look Delivers Major Engagement Boost for Netflix

Sensor Tower’s data also showed that Netflix’s U.S. mobile app engagement rose 35% compared with the previous hour. Usage was also approximately 50% higher than the same hour on the previous day and 41% above the same period one week earlier, demonstrating how effectively the GTA VI reveal attracted viewers.

Abe Yousef, Senior Insights Analyst at Sensor Tower, pointed to the value of major entertainment events and established intellectual property in driving streaming engagement. Yousef said that aligning Netflix with a highly anticipated console release could turn increased consumer interest into

“re-engagement from lapsed viewers and sign-ups from non-subscribers.”

The presentation was a significant event for both Netflix and Rockstar Games, as the streaming service hosted the first release of the extended preview before it later became available elsewhere. Netflix Tudum had previously described the partnership as a first-of-its-kind collaboration between the two entertainment companies.

Rockstar confirmed on its official website that the extended look was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. The developer described the footage as showcasing

“the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.”

The surge in Netflix engagement reflects the remarkable demand for new information about GTA VI, which arrives 13 years after Grand Theft Auto V. The upcoming game will follow Jason and Lucia as they become entangled in a criminal conspiracy across the fictional state of Leonida.
