Grey’s Anatomy is all set to begin its 21st season in less than three weeks, and it will be a season that breaks records. The show will bring some significant changes.
Meredith Grey will return to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, where she will be caught in a conflict with the Fox Foundation. At the same time, two well-known characters will bid farewell to the show. New characters are also expected to make their appearance at some point during the season.
The first episode of the season is titled “If Walls Could Talk.” It suggests that Grey Sloan is facing hard times without some of its top doctors. In this episode, the hospital deals with a potential mass casualty event, stretching its resources to the limit. New images from the episode show both the characters who are staying and those who are leaving sharing moments together.
The official description of the episode shares more about the struggles at Grey Sloan:
“After firing some of Grey Sloan’s best, Catherine continues to interfere with Meredith and Amelia’s research. Accidents at a climate change protest bring unique cases to the hospital, and Bailey encounters a blast from the past.”
Jake Borelli and Midori Francis to Exit Grey’s Anatomy in Season 21
Jake Borelli, who has been part of Grey’s Anatomy for seven seasons since his debut in Season 14, is going to leave the show during the early episodes of the new season. Some of the new images show Borelli’s character, Dr. Levi Schmitt, balancing his work at Grey Sloan with his personal life. He shares screen time with Dr. Jo Wilson, one of his close friends.
The season’s teaser hints that Jo has a secret she has been keeping from Dr. Link. It seems that Schmitt is the only one who knows about Jo’s pregnancy. Some of the images show Schmitt, Jo, and Link together, with Jo seemingly upset, while Schmitt tries to have a conversation with Link.
Midori Francis, who plays one of the interns, will also be leaving the show. In the released images, Francis can be seen wearing her intern scrubs, though it will only be for a short time. Both Francis and Borelli will make a few more appearances to wrap up their characters’ stories before exiting the series for good.
Meredith Grey Returns with New Challenges
Dr. Meredith Grey, a character who has not been at Grey Sloan for a while, will make her return this season. Meredith is dealing with trouble stirred up by Catherine, who is trying to take control of the Alzheimer’s research that Meredith has been heavily involved in.
The new images show Meredith looking thoughtful as she returns to a place filled with memories. It seems she is reflecting on her long history with Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
This season promises to offer more screen time for characters like Dr. Monica Beltran, played by Natalie Morales, and Nick Marsh, played by Scott Speedman. Meredith’s relationship with Nick is something that will be revisited in this season.
Dr. Bailey’s Past and New Faces in Grey’s Anatomy
In the season’s logline, there is a mention of a “blast from the past” for Dr. Bailey. This could mean the return of Dr. Sydney Heron, played by Kali Rocha, who Dr. Bailey first met back in Season 2.
This season will also introduce new characters. Floriana Lima will join the cast in her first season of Grey’s Anatomy. Michael Thomas Grant will also be part of the new cast, making his debut in this season as well.
There is a lot of excitement surrounding Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, and fans are eagerly waiting to see how the stories unfold. Don’t miss the season premiere on Thursday, September 26, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. If you miss the live airing, you can stream all episodes on Hulu.
