Recap
The Wye Valley in Herefordshire serves as the setting for Grand Designs Series 24, where a retired water reservoir that was once used to power passing steam trains has a special place in Maria Rosa’s heart. The cause is that when she was younger, her family member Leo took on the role of a grandfather for her. Leo cherished visiting this lovely spot to unwind and take in the breathtaking scenery.
Up until the 1970s, the water board owned this partially submerged industrial structure. Leo then purchased the site from a nearby farmer so that Rosa could use it as a riding arena for her small daughter. To Rosa’s surprise, Leo tended to predict that one day, the family would reside in the building. He was so enthralled with the location that he removed 326 wheelbarrows full of sludge from the reservoir below.
Rosa continued to ride her horse on the property as an adult. She thought that this pipe dream might someday come true because of the location and the vibe of the place. She would eventually meet skydiving instructor Craig, and six months into their developing relationship, she showed him the location that held great personal meaning for her.
With a view of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the couple hoped to realize their ambition of transforming the ancient site into their future home. It would not be simple to carry out; in order to fulfill their objectives, 3000 tons of earth had to be dug up.
And there was the price. Kevin estimated that the construction would cost £1 million after hearing the ideas. Craig and Rosa budgeted £750,000 for a 12-month project. £500,000 of which came from a bank loan.
They were awaiting quotations from contractors while constructing an access path for the upcoming builders. The highest price was £1.4 million, while the lowest was £1.1 million. However, by making concessions on the landscaping, they were able to get the cost down to £950,000.
But Leo passed away before significant work could start. Rosa was devastated by this since she had hoped he would live to see the construction completed, even though she was aware of his deteriorating health.
Leo left Rosa his house, which she sold to help with construction, but Craig and Rosa still needed to borrow an additional £100,000 from the bank.
