After watching the first trailer of Dragon Ball Daima, many fans, and I mean A LOT, thought that Daima is just Toriyama’s version of Dragon Ball GT, a non-canon series made by Toei Animation in 1996.
The reason behind this comparison is that in GT, Pilaf accidentally wishes for Goku to become a kid again, leading him to travel around the universe with Trunks and Pan in search of the Black Star Dragon Balls.
In Daima, an unknown character uses the Earth’s Dragon Balls to wish for everyone in Goku’s circle to become kids, a scenario arising out of a conspiracy. Goku and the Supreme Kai travel to various realms, including the Demon Realm, in search of the conspirator.
On paper, it looks similar. But the execution and Daima’s impact in the Dragon Ball world and its storyline will be more profound and meaningful than GT. And I’m not just referring to Daima’s canonicity.
Toriyama mentioned that this would be a whole new Dragon Ball that folks have never seen before, and the story will unravel the mysteries of the Dragon Ball world he has already created.
Dragon Ball Producer Confirms Daima Will Differ from GT, Teases Surprises
Further proof comes from Dragon Ball producer and Capsule Corporation Tokyo founder Akio Iyoku, who used to be Toriyama’s right-hand man when he was heading the Dragon Ball room at Shueisha.
In an interview addressing how Dragon Ball Daima’s story will differ from Dragon Ball GT, Iyoku-san acknowledged that fans would naturally think of GT when Goku becomes small in Daima. However, he assures that Dragon Ball Daima is a completely different story from GT and asks fans to judge the story for themselves once the series is released.
Until then, he cannot reveal the plot details to ensure everyone can enjoy discussing and speculating, thereby building anticipation for Daima’s release in October 2024.
Despite the limited promotion for Daima, Bandai Namco UK’s Brand Manager affirms that the new series will have many surprises in store for both new and old fans alike.
Dragon Ball Daima was first announced at New York Comic Con 2023, where the first trailer was revealed. The second trailer was revealed at the DRAGON BALL Game Battle Hour 2024 event in January 2024. On July 19, the third trailer was released by the Dragon Ball official site.
