Apple TV+ renewed Foundation, its well-known sci-fi series, for a third season over a year ago. The production team had already started filming even before the renewal. However, the series faced some challenges, including the departure of co-developer, showrunner, and director David S. Goyer.
Budget adjustments also affected production. These issues made fans wonder about the future of the show. Now, Deadline has confirmed that Foundation will return for Season 3, and Apple TV+ is already working on a fourth season with Skydance Television.
Season 3 started filming in May 2023, but there is no official release date yet. It will likely premiere later this year. In the meantime, Deadline has confirmed that Ian Goldberg, known for his work on Fear the Walking Dead, will take over as the showrunner and executive producer for Season 4. The writing team is already working on the next season. Goldberg has signed a deal with Skydance TV, which covers his work on the series.
Goldberg previously co-wrote a pilot script for Syfy’s Krypton alongside former showrunner Goyer. He was also an executive producer and co-showrunner on AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead.
Additionally, he co-created and produced Dead of Summer for Freeform with Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. His other projects include Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles on Fox, FlashForward on ABC, and Once Upon a Time, also on ABC.

What Happened to ‘Foundation’?
The second season of Foundation ended, and about three months later, Apple TV+ announced a third season. Production had originally stopped in spring 2023 due to the WGA strike.
The team planned to restart filming in Prague in February 2024, but it was delayed again because of budgeting and production challenges. Filming officially resumed in March 2024 after adjustments to the budget, including Goyer’s departure.
David S. Goyer created Foundation based on Isaac Asimov’s famous sci-fi stories. The series follows a group of exiles who realize that challenging the Galactic Empire’s collapse is the only way to prevent it.
The story focuses on four key individuals whose choices will shape humanity’s future. These characters navigate crises, shifting loyalties, and complex relationships while traveling across space and time.
The series features a talented cast, including Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey, Laura Birn, Cassian Bilton, Terrence Mann, Isabella Laughland, Kulvinder Ghir, Ella-Rae Smith, Holt McCallany, Rachel House, Nimrat Kaur, Ben Daniels, and Dimitri Leonidas.
Fans can expect Foundation to return with its third season this year while work continues on Season 4.
