While it may be difficult to keep track of all the reality series about Alaska living, viewers are unlikely to forget the 4 descendants of Kilchers who subsist off the ground on their ranch just outside of Homer, Alaska.
Watching the colorful and resourceful Kilcher clan survive on their breathtaking 640-acre plot of property amid the Alaskan wilderness has been a highlight of Discovery’s “Alaska: The Last Frontier” for the past ten seasons. The clan hunts, gardens, raise livestock and devises other creative ways to do so.
In a remote area of Alaska, the Kilcher family had been surviving off the land for 80 years. Yule Kilcher moved to Alaska throughout World War II from Switzerland to flee the dangers of conflict and establish a more tranquil life. As per Country Living, in 1941, Yule invited Ruth Weber, a friend, to travel with him to Alaska. Ruth and Yule soon get hitched, and the remainder is history.
Not only because they are Jewel’s relatives but also because they lead amazing lives. They are generally entertaining people who produce a large portion of their food. However, the way the series is produced gives the impression that the Kilchers will undoubtedly perish if they cannot kill a moose or capture some halibut.

What Is Alaska: The Last Frontier’s Storyline?
Yule Kilcher has happily farmed the land he acquired over 80 years ago for several generations. Yule, a longtime resident of Alaska who contributed to the constitutional provision and later worked in the Legislature, was steadfastly committed to his family’s goal of becoming homesteaders. He & his wife Ruth instilled in their family the value of independence and the need to rely only on what the earth could offer.
Atz and Otto Kilcher, two of Yule’s sons, preserve Yule’s vision and customs of a frugal lifestyle and impart these values to their offspring and their families on the 640-acre property, namely Atz Lee and Eivin, Atz’s son and Atz’s son, respectively.
The Kilcher household and their small village are tucked away in the Alaskan wilderness. Four generations of the Kilcher family, headed by progenitor Atz Kilcher, have farmed and resided on their property outside Homer, Alaska.
These primitive people, both men, and women, actually depend on the land. In the brief summer and fall seasons, they tend to their gardens, go fishing and hunting for sustenance, gather resources from the earth, and prepare their animals for the arduous Alaskan winters. The Kilchers’ off-grid lifestyle, without access to running water, electricity, or outside contact, is also shown to the viewers.

The youngest family member must stand up after he is attacked by a steer amidst a snowfall, and doctors are doubtful if he will survive. This season, Jewel makes a comeback to the program to assist Atz in working with veterans.
