Eva Kaili is a Member of the European Parliament and also was one of the youngest fourteen Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament. The Greek politician was a former Member of the Hellenic Parliament.
Born on October 26th, 1978, in Thessaloniki, Kaili pursued a degree in architecture and civil engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. She obtained her Master of Arts degree in International and European Affairs from the University of Piraeus in 2008, located in Athens, Greece.
With already a strong educational background, Kaili didn’t rest and started working on her Ph.D. from the University of Piraeus in 2014. She is pursuing her Ph.D. in the field of International Economic Policy. As of 2022, she is still reported to be continuing her studies and coursework. Before stepping into politics, Kaili was a newscaster for Mega Channel, also known as MEGA TV, a greek news telecasting channel. She worked as a newscaster from the years 2004-07.
She was the first woman to preside over the chair of the European Parliament’s (STOA) Science and Technology Options Assessment body from the years of 2017-2022. Over the years held various positions and honourary roles as a politician. She has been one of the most influential people and has been known for her determination in her work regardless of the situations that overthrew her.
Kaili’s Political Works and Tenure
In the year 1992, at the young age of 14, she joined the PASOK Youth, and in the year 2001, she served as the President of the School of Architecture Student’s Association.
Without any halt in her growth in her career, in 2002, she became the youngest member to be elected to the Thessaloniki City Council. She became the youngest candidate standing in the national elections, and later on, in 2007, she was elected as a member of the Hellenic Parliament for the first district of Thessaloniki. She served in the office of the Hellenic Parliament from September 20th, 2009, till May 9th, 2012.
She was a member of the Organisation of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Medittarian. She was also a member of the Greek delegation to the NATO parliamentary assembly as well.
From the year of 2014, Kaili has been a member of the European Parliament, making a recognizable name for herself through her work and diligence. She was also a member of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) from the year 2014 till her expulsion in the year 2022.
She became the Vice President of the European Parliament on January 18th, 2022, but her tenure as the Vice-President was shortlived due to her immediate expulsion on December 10th, 2022, due to her arrest by the Belgian Federal Police.
She was arrested under the charges of alleged corruption and bribery. She was arrested under the investigation of organized crime and money laundering for the support of Qatar. Evidence and proof in accordance with her allegations have been found. Qatar has been accused of corruption and bribery, and with the incident taking place at the same time as FIFA World Cup and it has been alleged that there has been a use of corruptive methods in the bidding to host the FIFA Cup in the country.
Eva Kaili’s Husband
Eva Kaili has been married to an Italian man Francesco Giorgi. Giorgi, just like his partner, is also a part of the political world, as he is an assistant in the office of an Italian MEP in the group of European Socialists. The couple has been together since 2020, and the couple shares a beautiful two-year-old daughter Ariadni.
Giorgi, along with former MEP Antonio Panzeri, has also been detained by the Belgian Police for further investigation and also being a part of the organized crime allegedly conducted by Kaili. He was also detained on December 9th, 2022, along with his wife, and currently, they are under supervision and interrogation by the same.
