In Doctor Slump, we’ve reached the point where the main characters are struggling with their emotions. At this time, neither Jeong-woo nor Ha-neul are quite sure what to make of the other; they are unsure of what their relationship is or could develop into. It only becomes worse because they are aware of how much they appear to need each other right now in their life.
This show is so lovely, wowza. It is undoubtedly romantic and has great chemistry, but what makes it stand out is how uncommonly happy the relationships are and how refreshingly unproblematic the characters are. You won’t often find yourself cheering for characters as passionately as we do for these two in today’s TV world.
Recap
In general, Ha-neul and Jeong-woo’s time together is the focus of Episode 5. Naturally, during this time, their feelings for one another are growing, and their uncertainty about those feelings is growing, but it also serves to highlight for us, the audience, the fact that these two, despite each other’s support, are unable to overcome their difficulties.
There is a great deal of uncertainty because of the old school rivalry. Being physically, emotionally, or circumstantially desirable to one another is new ground for them because they are accustomed to competing.
But it’s not all good news. One of the men at the station collapses, and Jeong-woo is brought back to his tragic past.
The two of them fool about and let the day sort of come to them naturally, and the episode does a fantastic job of incorporating this sense of novelty and discovery into the journey. But it’s not all good news. One of the men at the station collapses, and Jeong-woo is brought back to his tragic past.
That evening, Jeong-woo plays cards with Ha-neul through the night after missing the last train and finding a lodging in the town. Jeong-woo is awakened by similar dreams. She is aware that something is off, but she is unsure of what or how to assist. I don’t need her companionship right now.
Towards the episode’s conclusion, there is some conflict. Kyung-min persuades Jeong-woo that he can’t be content with his current situation, and he tells Ha-neul that he has only ever thought of her as a friend. After hearing this, her family starts treating Jeong-woo badly, believing he has spurned Ha-neul.
Ha-neul finds the concept difficult as well, candidly telling Jeong-woo that she’s not entirely sure where one friendship line stops and another one begins.
But putting this minor disagreement aside, Ha-neul eventually realizes that Jeong-woo is most likely experiencing PTSD, and she once more goes to help him when he is at his lowest point. He acknowledges missing her, casting doubt on his assertion that they are only friends.
