The Great British Sewing Bee started its journey on BBC Two in 2013, and the reality series is now all ready to launch its ninth season. The show is about individuals who enjoy sewing and have talent in the field but are still the most professional. The fight for Britain’s most talented sewer is held between those who have the talent but are not entirely the most professional.
This reality series has taken inspiration from another similar and popular show called The Great British Bake Off, which is another show for people who enjoy baking as a hobby but are not professionals in the field. The Great British Sewing Bee had Claudia Winkleman as the show’s host for its first four seasons, but she was later replaced by Joe Lycett, who presented the sixth and seventh seasons of the show. The eighth and current season of the reality show was and is going to be presented by Sara Pascoe, alongside Patrick Grant, and Esme Young as the judges.
The show is a lighthearted and wholesome watch, without the extra drama and fights. It has, during its time of airing, even invited celebrities for special episodes in an effort to raise awareness and money for BBC’s own charity foundation called ‘Children in Need’. Even though the show will be airing its ninth season, it is still fun to watch talented rookies try to compete with each other and show off their patterns and designs.
The Great British Sewing Bee Season 9 Episode 1: The Plot
One major checkbox one has to clear before entering or participating in the show is that you need to have the talent and knowledge about the craft, but you cannot be a learned professional in the field. The series usually casts ten contestants, all amateur sewers, and at the end of every episode, one weak contestant bids goodbye to their journey on the show.
The show has taken heavy inspiration from the format of another show titled, The Great British Bake Off, and just like the latter series, The Great British Sewing Bee also introduces a new theme with every episode. Each episode is usually divided into three parts, all somehow relate to the original main theme. Every part brings to the contestants new challenges and tasks that they are required to complete within a given time limit.
Unless the producers create a special episode, the show follows a pretty simple format for every episode of every season. In the first challenge, each participant is given the same pattern, and they are asked to keep to the given pattern as closely as possible. The contestants are judged on how closely they keep to the original pattern that was given to them.
The second task includes a ‘transformation challenge’, where every contestant is given the same piece of clothing, and they are judged on the basis of good their transformation of the original clothing into a completely new piece is. This task taps even more into their creative capacities, as the contestants are forced to reinvent an outfit from an already-made outfit.
The third challenge is for the contestants to make an outfit in a way that fits just right on the human models assigned to them. Called the ‘made to measure challenge’, the participants have to make their own outfits in a way that will fit the model that will get assigned to them later. All participants get judged by the judges on all three different tasks, and at the end, the one who scores the least on all the tasks and overall is forced to quit the show and be on their way home.
