Though King Charles III was already smitten with Camilla at that time, he could not marry her, considering Princess Diana was much younger than her, which put her in a place where she was very likely to give birth to the royal heir. Before jumping to our primary concern for the day, we shall take a look at the difference between a Queen and a Queen of consort for you to get a better understanding of the whole concept.
A Queen can be defined as a woman who is the rightful monarch or is ascended by the sovereign powers to the throne, even though the royal family line which can be applied to the late Queen Elizabeth, who rose to acquire the powers in her hands after the death of King George VI, her father in 1952. This can also be titled “Queen Reagnant” officially.
While Queen Consort means the spouse of the rightful monarch to the throne, the King’s wife, in this case, is referred to as Queen Consort officially according to the Royal Family’s rules. Unlike the ruling authorities (The King and Queen), a Queen Consort does not have any government duties. Their role is to provide the King with moral support and make public appearances for charities, events, and engagements.
Why Is Camilla The Queen And Not The Consort? Explained.
Camilla Parker is the wife of the reigning monarch, King Charles, for 17 years and not the monarch herself. As mentioned above, being a spouse to the sovereign monarch, she should officially be referred to as the Queen Consort and not the Queen. However, she is called “Queen Camilla,” which is just a shortened version of her official title, and calling Camilla the Queen does not change the official rules of her being a Consort.
It is also worth mentioning that no Queen Consort has ever been called by that before, and the title is simply shortened and instructed to drop the term “Consort” as it is a historical rule they follow. Even the prior Queen Consorts, like Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Alexandra, and the Queen Mother, were simply called Queen Empress or Queen instead of Queen Consorts.
Though the confusions are understandable, considering Camilla’s history with the royal family and its titles put her in a more controversial and complex place than her ancestors.
