Excited for Mayflies Episode 1? Mayflies, which is set in Scotland in the summer of 1986, centers on best friends Jimmy and Tully who “spark a beautiful connection built on music, movies, and the rebel spirit” in 1980s Scotland.
Mayflies on BBC1 will send viewers back to the heady era of 1980s music and culture as Scottish friends recall their unforgettable weekend in Manchester in 1986. Actors Martin Compston from Line of Duty, Ashley Jensen, and Tony Curran, from Agatha Raisins portray the roles of James, Anna, and Tully in the two-part drama that is adapted from the well-known Andrew O’Hagan novel.
Mayflies Plot
In the summer of 1986, when Thatcher’s Britain was at its peak, James and Tully left school and became best friends. They bonded through movies, music, and a rebellious nature. After school is over, they plan an unforgettable weekend of teenage follies in Manchester, and this is played out against the finest soundtrack ever made. There is a promise made to face life differently.
However, when Tully calls his old friend thirty years later to let him know he has terminal cancer and just months left to live, he presents a request that puts their friendship to the test. Tully asks his old friend James for assistance in taking his own life after telling him some heartbreaking news, but James isn’t happy keeping their plan hidden from Tully’s wife Anna.
With Rian Gordon from Vigil and Tom Glynn-Carney from House of the Dragon playing the primary parts of James and Tully 30 years earlier, their journey is told against a different timeline that is shown in 1986 and a summer that shaped their friendship. After finishing high school, the two youngsters bonded over music and a once-in-a-lifetime vacation from their sleepy Scottish village to Manchester’s flashing lights. There is a soundtrack loaded with well-known 1980s bands like The Fall and New Order.
Mayflies Cast
Jimmy, one of the two characters at the center of this story, will be portrayed by Martin Compston. According to Gaynor Holmes, the BBC Drama Managing Editor, Jimmy, and his closest friend Tully Dawson create an “intimate and heartbreaking depiction of male friendship.”
Curran and Compston are joined in the main cast by Jensen who plays Anna, Tracy Ifeachor from Showtrial playing Iona, Tom Glynn-Carney from House of the Dragon who plays young Tully, Rian Gorden from Vigil playing young Jimmy, Elaine C. Smith from Two Doors Down playing Barbara, and Charlene Boyd from The Control Room playing young Barbara. Along with Colin McCredie, Shauna Macdonald, and Cal MacAninch star.
Mayflies Episodes 1 Release Date & Preview
Mayflies Episode 1 will be released on 28 December 2022 on BBC One. There will only be two episodes in the mini-series and the second episode will be released a day after the first one. Therefore, BBC has you covered if you’re off work or searching for something to help pass the time between Christmas and New Year.
The Synopsis of Episode 1 is as follows: “The 30-year friendship between Tully and Jimmy is put to the test when Tully asks Jimmy to go to Switzerland with him so he can die there according to his own terms after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis.”

Episode 1 of Mayflies will air at 9:00 pm GMT on BBC One. Episode 1 will be released on Wednesday followed by Episode 2 on Thursday.
