Sortownia: The Plot
The show is based in one of Warsaw’s hospitals which has a sorting plant system in its emergency department. We are told that the sorting system is not authorized legally but is a system that has been well-adapted by the hospital. As we get further introduced to this system and how it works, we find that there is something not quite right underneath the system.
How the system works is that the patients who are brought to the hospital and there they get divided into different groups and get assigned different labels on the basis of the urgent requirement of a doctor. The labels or codes are shown to be of three types, i.e., red, yellow, and green.
The doctors and nurses all seem to be exhausted and work to the point of burnout, dividing patients into classifications and quantifying their problems. To many within the hospital feels questionable and morally wrong. What the show has tried to remind us is that trying to quantify somebody else’s pain as worthy or not worthy of being treated as quickly as possible should not be our job, that it is ‘something of a divine judgment.’
The show follows the main lead, who happens to be an experienced doctor working at the same hospital, who works long, exhausting shifts, all the while being forced to decide what patient to save first and who to let go of. The plans to explore this theme of the ultimate decision to save lives being left in the hands of mere humans and how that affects the human, the decisionmaker. And what corrupt consequences could be caused because of this?
