Maura Tierney Opens Up About Helen and more
Maura Tierney admitted that she will miss playing Helen Butler Solloway and will always cherish the years she worked with fellow series co-stars Dominic West, Ruth Wilson, and Joshua Jackson.
While the actress admittedly lamented not getting a glimpse of future Helen in the series finale, Tierney credited the creator as she was touched that the creator Sarah Treem and the writers took her opinion on whether Noah and Helen should get back together at the end.
While shedding light on her on-screen character, Maura explains how Helen is a character who has always put others instead of herself for as long as she can remember, and she believes that Helen was trained that way as a young child because she was the only child of two selfish parents so she was trained to cater to their needs before her own and she continues it into her marriage and with her children.
The actress explained how the character does not even necessarily know what she wants or is not even comfortable saying what she wants because it has been hard for her.
What did the Series Creator Have To Say About the Ending?
Series creator Sarah Treem admitted that she was avoiding that ending for a long time because it felt too sentimental, and she is admittedly terrible with sentimental stuff. While Sarah Treem further added that she was initially pretty resistant to it, it just felt right for the characters at a certain point in the show.
She further pointed out how, as a writer with a long-term television series, at a certain point, one has to let the characters take over and take their Svengali puppet master impulses out. Sarah explained how she is happy that Helen eventually comes to understand who she is at the end of the story and can make a choice that is for herself and herself alone which is what she finally does in the series finale.
