The 2022 American coming-of-age series High School follows the life of twins Tegan and Sara Quin in their journey to find identities of their own which are made complicated when one’s mimics the other’s so closely, all while living down the hall from the other.
Their story is told through the backdrop of a 90s grunge and rave culture and is created for television by Clea DuVall, based on the memoir of the same name by Tegan and Sara Quin, written in 2019. High School premiered on October 14, 2022, on Amazon Freevee, with the first four episodes from Season 1.
In their quest for self-discovery, the two twin sisters navigate identity, love, and music, and so far, the brand new series is well into its first season, as four episodes have already aired. Episode 4 is titled “Welcome Home,” and it also came out on Friday, October 14.
High School Season 1 Episode 4 Recap
In the fourth episode of High School Season 1, we see Sara getting in a funk as she is unable to stop being sad following the end of her relationship with Phoebe. In an attempt to distract her from moping, Sara’s new friends feel that the best way to lighten her mood would be to take her to a rave party.
The episode then comes back to Sara’s perspective to explain what events had culminated in them needing their father all of a sudden. Sara is a true victim of heartbreak, moping from Christmas all through New Year’s. No one seems to be able to get through to her. But Natalie saves the day by getting at least a half smile from her in theater class.
When the sisters sit down with Natalie and Ally, the former mentions the aforementioned rave party, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday. Tegan is scared they might get in trouble and only reluctantly agrees to go after much convincing when she sees that the idea of a rave made Sara more excited than she has been for months.
Natalie makes quite the impression on their mother, Simone, and they decide to lie to her about going to the party by saying that they will be staying over at Natalie’s the coming Saturday.
I fell in love with @teganandsara ‘s beautiful memoir, High School, on page one. The TV adaptation comes out tomorrow on @AmazonFreevee . I’m so excited and proud for everyone to see the brilliant work of our amazing cast and crew. Feeling very, very grateful. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/7Z2dIM5ZqH

At the party on Saturday, Natalie offers the twins some drugs, and they go on to have tons of fun. Then Tegan takes off to see Maya leaving Sara alone with Natalie and Ally, but Sara loses sight of her friends when the drug does its magic, only to find them making out moments later. This leads to an epic stare-down between Sara and Ally.
Finally, everyone heads over to Natalie’s house and starts discussing sleeping arrangements when they find the twins’ mother waiting outside in a car. To say she was not happy to be lied to would be an understatement, and Simone does not hold back from reproaching her daughters.
Simone exiled them to their father’s house when Sara seemed to have found life back as she talked back to her mother. This results in Simone kicking them to the curb and making them walk the remainder of the way to David’s house.
