Snoke, the Supreme Leader of the First Order in Star Wars, is arguably the most mysterious character in the franchise. His origins or motivations are unknown, but his ambition to conquer the galaxy makes him a formidable and influential figure. His mysteriousness and power have earned him a dedicated fanbase who are always eager for more information about the enigmatic figure.
We know that Snoke is incredibly powerful in both the Force and military strategy and commands immense respect from his followers. Snoke’s appearances in Star Wars media have only added to his mystique; whether it was his holographic projection in The Force Awakens or his surprise appearance in The Last Jedi, Snoke has caught the attention of fans around the world.
A canon novel, “Star Wars: The Secrets of the Sith,” gave us a clearer idea of who Snoke is. So, let’s take some time together to discover more about Snoke’s past and secrets in Star Wars lore.
Who Is Supreme Leader Snoke?
Initially appearing in the feature film “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” Supreme Leader Snoke is a humanoid creature with a horrific pale scarred face and menacing yellow eyes. In the movie, he’s played by veteran sci-fi actor Andy Serkis (who also played Gollum in the Lord of the Rings saga).
In the film, Snoke is the leader of the First Order, a Sith group that seeks the destruction of the New Republic and —as all the Siths aspire— the eradication of the Jedi. While in The Force Awakens, we do not indicate how powerful he is; the movie gives us clues in several scenes and dialogues of how powerful this guy is.

What Is Snoke’s Backstory in Star Wars?
The films don’t detail Snoke’s past, but it’s implied that he was around for the events of the original Star Wars trilogy and may have been a manipulator behind the scenes. He was also instrumental in deleting Kylo Ren into one of the sequel trilogy’s primary antagonists.
Fans had a lot of questions and theories about Snoke before the release of The Force Awakens. While some viewers were dissatisfied with his lack of exposition regarding his character, others enjoyed the mystery surrounding him. The revelation of his true identity in The Last Jedi overshadowed his role in the plot.
Snoke Can Be Traced Back To The Clone Wars
The history between Palpatine and Snoke goes back to the Clone Wars when Palpatine could manipulate and control clones as his willing puppets. It is believed that he took a particular liking to one clone, whom he named Snoke. With his puppet in place, Palpatine began slowly building an entirely new force inside the clone’s body, one entirely devoted to the Dark Side of the Force. As Snoke aged, his connection to the Dark Side grew exponentially, and he became entirely devoted to Palpatine’s wishes.

This Canon Novel Gives Us More Detail Into Snoke’s Backstory
In the canon novel “Star Wars: The Secrets of The Sith,” it is revealed to us what are the purpose and the intention of Supreme Leader Snoke. Written from Palpatine’s perspective, “The Rule of Two,” a central tenet of the Sith, dictates that there can only be two Sith Lords at any given time. The Rule of Two is meant to recreate the Force’s Dyad. Moreover, the book reveals that Palpatine wanted to create a Dyad with Darth Vader.
But moving on to Snoke, it is revealed that Snoke is a design of strand casting and countless modified clone bodies that Palpatine created as a vessel for him to inhabit. However, that purpose was abandoned after his creation because Palpatine’s power over the Force was too massive.
But Snoke had the uncanny ability to hold immense power in affinity to the Force, eventually making him the perfect puppet for Palpatine’s wishes. Palpatine used Snoke to manipulate both the Jedi and the Sith to achieve his ultimate goal of destroying both sides and creating a new, powerful force. Therefore, it is safe to say that a Dyad of Palpatine and Snoke exists by the Rule of Two.
