Tal Wilkenfeld first came to the notice of the global bass community in 2007 when a bass solo he performed with the late Jeff Beck went viral. Her jazz sensibilities, paired with exquisite rhythm, time, and phrasing, captured the attention of aspiring and professional bassists worldwide.
Wilkenfeld is an electric bassist from Australia. She came in to the States as a guitarist and later switched to electric bass. Transformation, her debut album, hit the charts in 2006.
Wilkenfeld has shared the stage and collaborated with a ton of well-known musicians, including Chick Corea, Hiram Bullock, The Allman Brothers Band, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Wayne Krantz, Demi Lovato, and Vinnie Colaiuta, to name a few. She has also collaborated with Herbie Hancock, Ringo Starr, Jackson Browne, Pharrell, Buddy Guy, John Mayer, and others on projects.

At the tender age of 14, Wilkenfeld, who is widely regarded as the emerging star of the bass guitar, began playing the instrument in her native Sydney, Australia. She quickly realized her passion and decided to pursue music professionally, and moved to the United States two years later to study electric guitar.
Tal says she switched from guitar to bass at the age of 17. She said she wasn’t really permitted to practice when she was younger because her family was conservative and they prioritized academics over passion, so when she moved to the United States, she started playing all the time and tinkered her hands.
Wilkenfeld converted to electric bass almost after a year of moving to the States. In 2004, she got her graduation from the Los Angeles College of Music. She accepted a Sadowsky Guitars endorsement and set about organizing a band and writing songs.
Tal decided to move to New York City after her school, which we are pretty sure she might not have completed and began building a reputation for herself in the New York Jazz club scene, where she would go to just watch and study, according to her interview, and she described what she gained as a priceless education.
During this time, she crossed paths with members of The Allman Brothers Band, who encouraged her to sit in during their gig at the Beacon Theatre, which was her first appearance on such a massive stage. This launched her professional career as a musician, and she eventually collaborated with the biggies in future, which we mentioned earlier.

Where Is She Now?
In contrast to her 2007 instrumental album Transformation, which was soaked in jazz and funk sensibilities and searing bass solos, Love Remains, her very recent released album, has a grunge and acoustic singer-songwriter atmosphere.
“At the moment of composing the song, it does have an impact on the layout, but that layout can alter quickly,” she explains. It’s basically just a means to bring the song out of you. If you wish, it can become irrelevant, or you can decide that “the instrument she created this song on, and the part that she came up with, works so well with this lyric or melody that she would like to keep it,” she said.
When asked who are her role models? She said she admired Anthony Jackson and considered him a mentor, and she would never listen to a bass player to influence her bass playing; more often than not, it is someone who plays a different instrument, or no musician at all, that influences her.
