The People’s Court Show Format
John Masterson was the first person who had the idea to create a show around a real court by putting a camera inside a court and broadcasting the case on television. He pitched his idea to many studios but eventually got rejected. So he thought a lot and came up with a refined version of his original idea.
He gave a proposal that Instead of putting a camera inside a court, why not take the court affairs away from the court and handle the case in a studio in front of a camera? After many attempts, his idea was finally accepted & hence The People’s Court finally made its debut on television.
The People’s Court mostly deals with small cases & disputes. Before the judgment begins, all the necessary details about the case are given to the audience. Both parties are interviewed and examined very carefully by professional judges, both parties are given equal rights to present their cases. The judge hears them impartially and then gives his/her judgment. All the cases that are brought in this show have legal binding, which means whatever judgment comes out will be accepted legally and has to be followed by both parties.
Who Are The Judges On The People’s Court Show?
The first ever judge who presided on the show was judge Joseph Wapner, who acted as the show’s sole judge for 12 years, from 1981 to 1993. After that, the show got canceled due to a fall in ratings.
But in 1997, the show was again revived & Ed Koch, a former Mayor & Lawyer, gets appointed as the show’s new judge. He served his tenure as a solo judge from 1997 to 1999. He was succeeded by Judge Jerry Sheindlin, during his era, the show struggled a lot & eventually, its ratings dropped. His tenure came to an end in 2001.
