Jon sings a moving original song he wrote titled “Tell Me Ray.” The judges give him a standing ovation. Luke comments, “You definitely demonstrated the appropriate foundation of what we’re looking for. Lionel and Katy agree that Jon writes excellent songs. A quick recap
Ashley Tankard has made 15 attempts to be an American Idol contestant, and she is hopeful that this will be her lucky day. The 22-year-old becomes emotional before performing “You Broke Me First” by Tate McRae. They request that she sing the song once more with improved enunciation.
Ashley is complimented by Luke on her “excellent tones,” although she stumbles at the chorus’s high notes. Lionel is aware of Ashley’s anxiety. She simply lacks self-assurance. Luke doesn’t believe Ashley is ready, but Katy likes to offer her a chance. Everything depends on Lionel. Lionel grants Ashley the necessary “yes”!
Full-time trucker Cody Winkler is interested in trying his hand at music. He joins Luke in the performance of “Under a Neon Halo” by Bill Green. Cody is “as real as it gets,” in Katy’s opinion. Cody receives a “yes” from Lionel, but Luke and Katy both reject him.
Matt Wilson is prepared for his life’s next phase. A magnificent performance of “For Tonight” by Giveon is performed by the teacher’s assistant, age 21. Lionel commented, “You have simplicity and sincerity. Luke continues, “That was one of the most sincere, true, and honest performances I’ve ever seen.”
The judges invite Matt’s spouse in so they can tell the pair that Matt is headed to Hollywood ahead of them! Kaylin Hedges, who is 15 years old, has a voice that belies her youth. In order for her to study music in New York, her father had to deploy.
While he has skipped her birthday for almost ten years, he will return next year. She performs “I’m Almost There” by Lonestar in a gorgeous performance. During her audition, her father gives her a personal surprise. Her mother doesn’t know and is shocked to see her spouse.
The judges give Kaylin the only second Platinum Ticket to make this reunion even more enjoyable. In Clover, South Carolina, Aiden Adair, 19, makes a living by cutting pizza. Due to his unprofessional rendition of “Break My Heart” by Finneas, the assessors want a different song from him.
He especially shines in his rendition of James Bay’s “Let It Go” in this performance. He “went from a 4 to an 8 in 5 minutes,” Katy informs Aiden. After giving Aiden a second chance, the jurors unanimously agreed that he should go to Hollywood.
McKayla Stacey, 16, is putting in an application for American Idol, 16 years after her father, Phil Stacey, placed in the top six of season 6. She sings Sara Bareilles’ “She Used To Be Mine” as her father plays the piano. Katy criticizes McKayla’s “inexperience,” while Lionel praises the singer’s “excellent voice.”
Lionel and Katy feel McKayla was “born for a time like this,” contrary to Luke, who thinks she is a little too immature for the competition now. McKayla is relocating to Los Angeles. Nutsa is living her dream by participating in the American Idol auditions.
The 25-year-old Georgian made the 17-hour trip to the audition location. She sings “Lady Marmalade” in a theatrical style. Although Katy is aware that there is a voice there, Nutsa is going a little too far. In response to their request, Nutsa sings Whitney Houston’s “The Greatest Love of All” as her second song. Lionel comments, “You nailed it. Katy requests that Nutsa simply “be authentic” going forward. She is being sent to Hollywood by the judges!
