HGTV’s The Ugliest House In America is now on its fourth season of reviewing some of the worst real estate decisions ever made across the United States. The show, hosted by Retta, tours the four corners of the US in search of some really bad-taste houses, and instead of humiliating the owners, the show intends —with Retta’s comedic remarks— to provide the audience with some learning so they don’t make the same mistake.
With three seasons in a row, the question as to who won The Ugliest House in America stands for season four, but what about the previous season? It surely had to be a piece of real estate with poor location, poor choice of interior decor, poor landscaping, all of the above, or maybe something else. Let’s try to find out what made that house stand out among the rest.
Who Won The Ugliest House In America?
Since season four is still ongoing, there are plenty of ugly houses to look at as the show’s season moves on. But for season three, HGTV, Retta and her team considered the Merideth family house —where Malcolm, the patriarch, Valerie, the mom, and Alex, the son, live— in Manassas, Virginia, to be the ugliest house in America for season 3.
The house was chock-full of celestial decoration, angels, cherubs, stained glass, statues, rugs; you name it. Everywhere you look, there was some sort of angel there.
The Merideth home is a three-bathroom, three-bedroom house with 4,642 square feet, but it definitely needed some work. The house was supposed to look like a brick house, but they were painted bricks, and the paint was chipping off; plus, the electrical wiring and insulation were having issues that needed to be tackled.
The Merideths mixed tin ceiling tiling with wallpaper without a sense of proper distribution, bringing lots of noise and distraction to the house. Alex and his wife like it, though. That piece of property was deemed the Ugliest House in America, and the Merideths won a hefty prize of $150,000 —hope they don’t spend it all in one place and try to redo their place.

The Realtor
The realtor working with the Merideths got a call from HGTV after the production crew saw the listing, she confirmed with HGTV, and then the arrangements were in motion to showcase the house.
By the time the HGTV crew went to the Merideth house, that family had already made some modifications, taking out at least one hundred pieces of angel-themed decoration; imagine if they’d left them! If you haven’t seen that episode, I suggest you do, because you’ll laugh.
The Transformation
The HGTV crew, Retta and Alison Victoria landed in Manassas to transform that angel-themed home from top to bottom; they redid the kitchen, removed the tin ceiling, installed better wallpaper, redid the flooring and the electrical wiring, and improved the insulation. And yes, they took out all of the angel-themed decorations.
The master bedroom and bathroom were also redesigned; now they look more spacious, there’s better storage distribution, and the crew installed a tub and a shower space with modern, elegant designs.
It’s hard to believe its the same house when you look at the before, and the after pictures and videos, one of the great things about this renovation and real estate show is that the decoration and the kind of inner workings that make a house valuable in the real estate market are very determinant for the outcome of the sale.
You learn a thing or two about homeownership decisions and learn from other people’s mistakes, making The Ugliest House in America a great and fun show to watch
What Happened To That House?
After the Merideths won Season Three of The Ugliest House In America, they flipped the property and moved elsewhere; in any case, that house was already on the market; it just needed to have some intense remodeling and redesign to improve the possibility of a sale.
