The Hobbit- Premise
The film begins with Hobbit Bilbo writing the story of his adventures for his nephew Frodo, to read on his 111th birthday. The film then takes the audience to the time when Bilbo hasn’t been involved with the dwarfs and the Dwarf King brought an era of prosperity for his kin. Billo lives a happy life until he is approached by Grandpa Gandalf to convince Billo to join the group of dwarfs on a quest to reclaim Kingdom Erebor.
The era of prosperity is destroyed by the arrival of the dragon Smaug. Dale, a nearby town, is destroyed by Smaug’s arrival, who drives the dwarves out of the Lonely Mountain and takes their pile of gold. Meanwhile, Thorin, Thor’s grandson’s ever-lasting hatred for wood elves, and King Thranduil began after the group left the hillside instead of aiding Thorin’s people. Grey Of Gandalf tricks Bilbo into hosting Thorin and his dwarves for dinner with a clear agenda of getting Bilbio to join them on their journey to re-enter the Lonely Mountains.
Bilbo initially refuses and is unwilling to join Thorin and his group of dwarves on the journey to reclaim Lonely Mountain, only to have a change of heart and join them the next day after the group dejectedly leaves without him. Thorin, Bilbo, and the group of dwarves are held captive by three trolls, and Bilbo tries to stall them from eating them till Gandalf turns them into stones by exposing them to sunlight. The group is led by Gandalf to Rivendell through a hidden passage after they are chased by Orcs.
Radagast the Brown has an encounter with Bilbio and the company where he recounts the coincidental encounter with Necromancer at Dol Guldur. In Rivendell, Lord Elrond reveals to the company the presence of a hidden door on the map carried by the group that will only be visible to them on Durin’s Day. The white council is approached by Gandalf, who presents them with Morgul’s blade.
Gandalf and the group continue their journey through Misty Mountains, where they find themselves stuck in a massive battle between Stone Giants. The group is taken hostage by goblins while the group takes refuge in a cave. Bilbo separates from the group and meets Gollum in a crevice, where Bilbo falls and takes the ring that Gollum is searching for in the pit. Gollum and Bilbo decide to play a game of riddle, and the winner is to keep the ring; surprisingly, Bilbo wins the riddle with trickery.
Bilbo learns the ring holds the power to grant invisibility and is chased by a furious Gollum. Bilbo gets a chance to kill the Gollum. Instead, he spares his life. After a series of adventures, the film ends with Thorin dying and Gandalf reviving him. Once awake, Thorin renounces his hatred for the elves, and the company witnesses the Lonely Mountain, where Smaug is awoken.
