Interesting Facts About Black Adam
Black Adam is a complex character which is quite evident from his anti-hero character description, and it can sometimes be quite difficult to know why he is the way he is and the reasoning behind his actions. So to all those that are unfamiliar with the character Black Adams, here are some interesting facts to keep in mind before you line up to watch the movie in the cinemas.
He Murdered The Pharaoh and Is An Ancient Egyptian
The name “Teth-Adam” represents the name of an ancient Egyptian, which was first used in the comics in 1945, where Black Adam was introduced as Teth-Adam. Teth-Adam was chosen by the wizard Shazam to become a superhero with god-like powers because of his good and kind nature, and after receiving the powers, all he had to do was say the word Shazam! and voila! He would have his god-like powers with a black suit.
But as we all know what ultimate power does to a man, Teth-Adam turned to the dark side and decided to kill the Pharaoh of Egypt to take his throne. The wizard saw this, and knowing that he could not snatch away Black Adam’s powers, he decided to banish him to the unknown depths of the universe till he could find a suitable replacement. But of course, Black Adam found his way back after traveling for centuries and fought the new replacement.
Not a Ruler But a Protector of Kahndaq
In the comic JSA #56, Kahndaq was ruled by a dictator who was then dethroned violently by Black Adam by marching in with the Justice Society and demolishing the dictators’ forces. In the third volume of Justice League #7.4, Black Adam was brought back to life by the people of Kahndaq in order to protect them from their oppressive dictator. Being an anti-hero and mostly depicted in a negative light, this quality of Black Adam to always protect his home and his people is unique and also balances the scales of hero/villain. Hence, after dethroning the dictator, Black Adam becomes the protector of Kahndaq.
A Legend Is Born
Black Adam, or then Teth-Adam, was the son of the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramesses II, born in Kahndaq. He received the powers from the wizard Shazam as the wizard was in search of a champion worthy enough to hold his powers, and that led him to Teth-Adam because of his kind nature towards others. For this reason, the Wizard chose Teth-Adam as his champion to wield his powers, but the ceremony was disturbed by Blaze, a demon. This meant that whenever Teth-Adam spoke the word Shazam! to receive the powers, he would not receive the powers of the Wizard; rather, he would receive the powers of the other Egyptian Gods.
Black Adam Started World War III
World War III happened because of a betrayal by a dear friend of Black Adam. The friend was none other than Sobek, a talking crocodile who had been his loyal companion for many years. But Black Adam was unaware of the fact that Sobek actually was the assassin Famine, created by Apokolips as the Fourth Horsemen with the sole purpose of destroying Black Adam when the time came.
This led to Sobek demolishing Black Adam’s home and killing his dear wife Isis, who, in her dying breath, wished Black Adam to seek revenge. Black Adam went berserk and annihilated 2 Million people on planet Earth, which led to the event of World War III, with every superhero on the planet joining forces to stop Black Adam’s rampage. Black Adam was able to defeat the superheroes of China, Teen Titans, Doom Patrol, and more without facing any issues.
Black Adam’s Relationships
Teth-Adam fell in love with Shiruta, and later, they both got married. Shiruta became the mother of two sons, Gon and Hurut. Since Teth-Adam was already the protector of Kahndaq by then, he and his family lived luxuriously in Kahndaq with the local people absolutely in love with their protector and worshipped him and sang songs of his victories and feats. With time, Black Adam met other heroes of ancient Egypt as well while staying at Kahndaq, like the Wizard Nabu and Prince Khufu, also known as Doctor Fate and Hawkman. The three went on to form an alliance of a lifetime.
Martian Manhunter’s Absolute Nightmare
When Black Adam had gone on a rampage and started World War III to avenge his wife’s death, Martian Manhunter took it upon himself to put a stop to Black Adam’s rage. Black Adam had already wiped out millions and showed no signs of stopping, and Martian Manhunter decides to call him out but with little luck. Black Adam destroys J’onn in a matter of seconds with his lightning. Martian Manhunter then proceeds to use his famous telepathy ability to go inside Black Adam’s mind and gain control, but it is of no use as J’onn was unleashed to a traumatic view of all the people Black Adam had killed that day which also led to the Martian Manhunter unable to handle Black Adam’s physical and emotional state, leading him to escape the planet and into the space.
Black Adam Won’t Back Down
Even without his powers, Black Adam has proved over time that he cannot be held back. Many instances can be noted like at the end of World War III, Shazam changed the words Black Adam needs to get his powers, he loses access to all his powers, yet he did not give up and traveled as a mortal human across the global so that he could resurrect his wife, Isis. He faces many hardships as any mortal would do but comes out on top every time due to his sheer willpower and grit, and determination. Not many can display this kind of character and quality, be it a villain or a hero. This is what sets Black Adam apart from all the other characters in the DC Universe.
