First aired in 2014, the American reality television series called Married at First Sight, is a show that has taken inspiration for its theme from another Danish series titled ‘Gift Ved Forste Blik’. The show is a reality show where participants who are looking for a real-life partner get matched with their potential partners by experts.
Because making a conscious effort to be nice and likable so that the opposite gender is attracted to you and you eventually manage to find a partner by meeting and connecting with people is an impossible task, the contestants voluntarily make the decision to come on a television series in hopes of doing something they could not do in their actual life.
While the show is definitely dramatic and entertaining to watch or use as background noise to accompany you when you are completely alone because we know that, for the most part, the series is pointless considering that over the sixteen seasons of the show, and out of a total of sixty-four couples that the experts put together, only thirteen of them are still together.
Okay, it may not be all that bad because, for a show like this, thirteen couples is also a relatively large number. For those who have been living under a rock and do not know what the show is about, basically, experts and counselors play Cupid and bring together a bunch of strangers and make couples out of them.
These couples get married and live together as a real, normal couple would, and by the end of the season, they have to decide if they will stay together even after the show ends or if they will divorce each other during the finale itself. With a success of rate of twenty percent, the show is still going strong, gathering views from the audience on a daily.
How Many Seasons Are There In Married At First Sight?
With a new season airing currently, the show has finally reached a total of sixteen seasons. The first season of the show aired on July 8th, 2014, which was a year after the original Danish version of the series aired.
Surprisingly, one of the couples from the first season, Jamie Otis and Doug Hehner, are still together, which has given the show slight credibility.
Though the show now is more or less watched by people for the kick of it and because it makes for a nice show for when you want to rot your brain.
Is It Worth Watching?
The show has drama, which sometimes feels exaggerated, and a mild touch of reality, which actually had us fully invested in it, but with a few insiders revealing that there are a lot of different aspects of the show that are practiced and scripted, it is hard to feel connected with the contestants.
Obviously, the couples are complete strangers, and parts of their married lives are totally real, which has led to such awkward moments on-camera that it makes you want to rip your eyes out and throw your television away.
The concept of the show is nothing outrageous. Instead, it has the full potential of being a wholesome watch, which it is for a few couples, but for the most part, the show is bland and boring.
The people on the show are there to claim their fifteen minutes of fame, and more often than not, their marriages end up in divorce.
It is ridiculous to see a bunch of strangers thrown together to become a couple, but another thing that leaves us speechless is that these ‘experts’ on the show judge people within a few hours and claim to have found the best partners for these poor contestants. It genuinely almost feels like a scam.
Another thing that irks the viewers is how superficial most of the couples on the show are and how uninterested they are in their so-called match. A lot of the couples just seem poorly matched, but they still go with the decision because of fame and money. The experts seem like they focus more on how they look on camera instead of actually offering advice that is worth listening to.
The show is a hot mess, but it still manages to garner views from the audience which firstly, says a lot about us as a society and our watching habits but also that no matter what, watching a group of people with a personality similar to that of a wet peanut, getting together and being dramatic and putting up shows is probably the way to kill your time.
Now do we recommend that you watch this show when the world has so many underrated masterpieces that you could watch instead? No, we would rather you stream something that deserves the hype, but we recommend you watch this show when you want to turn your brain off and not use it for a while. Absolutely yes.
