The anime starts with a scene where an American firebombing during one of the toughest times as World War II, splits the two siblings from their parents. Seita, can be seen as a teenager, is on a mission to find his younger sister named Setsuko.
This animated story follows Seita as he looks after Setsuko. Their story of survival is both painful and realistic. The siblings depend entirely on one another and fight fiercely to be united and survive.
In the end, Setsuko suffers malnourished, and Seita feels obligated to use the last of their resources to purchase food for her. Seita is cooking lunch for Setsuko when she passes away from sickness because, by the time he returns with food, she is having hallucinations about eating food.
One of the greatest depictions of the effects of war on civilians may be seen in Grave of the Fireflies. The loss of our two main characters not making it through the trials the movie puts them through is made much worse when one considers their ages. It’s a story of survival in some of the toughest circumstances imaginable.
The anime comes with lots of pain and emotions, which one can feel just by watching the struggle of these two kids who want nothing but to have food. In the end, as one of the siblings dies, it also made emotions in their audience and anime lovers out there.
