The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is one of the films in the vast franchise of Lord of the Rings. Its ending is surely not an easy one to understand. Return of the King happens to be the third novel in the set of Lord of the Rings. This movie also served as an end to the franchise as it was the third and the last film. It was released in 2003.
This is a direct sequel to the 2002 film. We see that Frodo along with Sam and Gollum gave reunited once again and are making their way towards Mount Doom. This place is located in Mordor. The trio has taken it upon their shoulders to destroy the One Ring. Well, the other two members do not actually know what Gollum has in plan for himself when they reach the desired spot. Then we see other characters such as Merry and Pippin and Gandalf trying to assimilate an army together and unite everyone in order to fight against Sauron. They will also need to fight against the legions in Minas Tirith if they want to conquer him.
The film was an obvious box office success as it grossed over 1 billion dollars throughout the world. It was just made on an initial budget of 94 million dollars which is very less compared to the success it endured. As for the critics, they claim that Return of the King is considered to be an epitome of the fantasy genre films. Just like the other movies which are set in the franchise, we see that Return of the King is one of the most influential movies to be ever released. It was nominated for eleven awards at the Academy Awards and won all of them.

The story begins with the hobbit Smeagol who is seen fishing with his cousin. The two come across the One Ring in the river. The hobbit’s mind gets affected by the power of it and he even kills his cousin for the same reasons. The ring continues to fester in his mind and destroy his logic. Thus, the hobbit decides to separate himself from the normal world and moves to the Misty Mountainside where he is known as The Gollum.
Now, we come back to the later centuries. Here, we see that Gandalf has assembled his team and is leading at the Ear of the Ring. After winning, the group comes back to the Helm’s Depp after they have won. When Pippin looks, he sees a vision of Sauron and a burning tree which disturbs his thoughts. Gandolf now thinks that Sauron is planning to attack Minas Tirith. Thus, Pippin reaches the place as soon as possible and tries to warn the steward about the upcoming battle.
Did The Hobbits Save The World?
In the other scene, we see that Frodo and Sam along with Gollum are going to Mordor. The other two have no clue about their past Gollum. His mind is corrupted with greed for the ring and he plans to run away with it as soon as they reach. There was a lot of chaos as soon as The Hobbits reached Mordor. It was obvious that Gollum has plans, but what came unannounced was the fact that Sam and Frodo have also been corrupted because of the Ring. As the trio tackles with all the challenges thrown at them, they continue their journey to Mount Doom.
King Theoden is prepared for the next steps and thus, is preparing his men. Meanwhile, Arwen is dying as he does not want to leave middle earth. Theoden enters the next scene with his army and starts a battle against the Orcs. The king was having initial success with this war but soon, things escalate to the next level and he dies in his niece’s arms. Later, Aragorn comes to the battlefield with the Army of the Dead. He manages to defeat Sauron and thus, the battle is over.
The Dead are now out of their curse and can go happily. As for Frodo and Sam, they are trying to fight off Gollum on Mount Doom but in the chaos, Gollum falls into the lava along with the ring which obviously gets destroyed and the volcano erupts. All the people, and hobbits who took part in saving the world, have successfully done so and they return to their homes happily.
