He is a taxi driver in New York City. This city, in the movie, is rotting with corruption and morally ill people. The timeline is set during the Vietnam War. Travis is slowly losing his mind in the city as he is working at night. He is also a veteran. The film can be called a moderate success at the box office. It was made on a budget of 1.9 million dollars. It earned more than 28 million upon its release. Filming began in New York City in the summer of 1975.
The film begins with the character Travis Bickle. He is 26 years in age and has been released from the US Marine and Vietnam War. Given the fact that he lives alone in New York City, the man suffers from PTSD from his time in the war. This is when he takes a job as a taxi driver working night shifts in the city. He is doing this in order to deal with his chronic insomnia as well as the loneliness that he feels so dearly. He witnessed the crime in the city that happens at night and is disgusted by it all.
Soon, we see Betsy entering the scenes. Travis becomes infatuated with her. She happens to be a campaign volunteer for senator presidential candidate named Charles Palantine. Travis goes to the campaign office where Betsy works her job and asks her out for coffee. She agrees to the same, and the two go on a date. During their time together, Travis takes Betsy to a porn theatre which infuriates her, and she leaves. He tries to make up with her, but she does not respond.

Losing his mind furthermore, Travis confides in a fellow taxi driver. Although, his colleague dismisses his violent thoughts and assures him that he will be alright. Although, it is obvious that Travis is not okay and needs guidance. He further develops disgust toward corrupt people in New York City. Travis buys three handguns and designs them in such a way that he can hide them in his sleeves.
While doing a taxi run at night, he sees a man trying to rob a store and shoots him. Later, he gets politically involved and wants to shoot a corrupt leader. Although, he is stopped by their security and is sent away. Failing to do so, Travis still has his vision set on Iris, a child prostitute. He wants nothing but to desperately save her.
Taxi Driver Ending Explained
During the climax of the film, we see that Travis arms up and goes to the prostitution house where Iris works. He shoots her pimp and manages to take down other people who have been abusing women for the sake of pleasure. While in a shootout, Travis gets severely injured and is bleeding heavily. He finds Iris in the corner, crying and scared. They share a moment where the child has understood how this man saved her life. Later, the police come in. Travis goes into a coma with all the injuries he has upon himself.
Although, the press makes Travis a hero, given that he busted a child abuse porn ring and saved Iris. Even their parents of Iris thank him. This is why all charges against him are dropped. Soon when he recovers from his coma, Travis starts being a taxi driver once again. He gives a ride to Betsy, who says how she read about his bravery through the media. Travis drops her home and does not take money for the ride. He drives off silently with a smile on his face.
