The upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time release on Nintendo Switch 2 is reportedly seeing stronger physical demand than some retailers anticipated. While limited-edition Zelda merchandise has already sold out at various locations, the physical game itself is also becoming difficult to find at some retailers ahead of launch.
According to IGN Brazil, Gamer Hut commercial director Ricardo Vieira said the game’s physical sales have performed beyond the retailer’s initial expectations. The company had already placed what it considered a large order, but Nintendo’s announcement of special packaging significantly changed the situation.
Limited Foil Cover Boosted Interest in Ocarina of Time
The physical Switch 2 release features a textured foil cover available as part of the first print run. The special packaging was revealed during a Nintendo Direct after retailers had already submitted their purchase forecasts.
Vieira explained that Gamer Hut initially believed it had ordered enough copies based on the information available at the time. However, once Nintendo revealed the limited packaging, the retailer attempted to increase its allocation.
“As soon as Nintendo Direct presented this special packaging in limited quantities, I contacted them and asked to double our order,”
Vieira told IGN Brazil.
The request reportedly came too late, as production could not accommodate the additional order. Vieira said the retailer had been confident about its original forecast before Nintendo revealed the special cover.

First-Print Copies Could Become Highly Sought After
Other online retailers have reportedly experienced temporary shortages of the physical release, suggesting that demand is not limited to one store or market.
Nintendo has also indicated that some pre-orders will receive copies from the first print run featuring the textured foil artwork. The Nintendo Australia Store currently notes that pre-purchases are expected to receive first-print stock while supplies last.
The situation highlights how collectible packaging can influence demand for physical games, particularly for a major Zelda release. With the first-print foil cover being limited, players interested in owning that specific version may have another reason to secure their copies before the special packaging runs out.
The Switch 2 release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is therefore shaping up to be more than a straightforward re-release, with the physical edition itself becoming a notable part of the game’s appeal.
