1. Natsu Cannot Control His Power-ups
Every shonen series features the transformation of heroes. In Dragon Ball, we get to see our favorite Saiyans becoming Super Saiyans to defeat their enemies. Fans love to see a story where hard work and perseverance pay off. Transformations or power-ups are part and parcel of the game. Natsu has two different power-ups of his own, i.e., the Fire Lightning Dragon Mode and the Dragon Force. Lightning Dragon Mode lets him generate flames and lightning to deal extra damage. And Dragon Force makes him more like a dragon. However, even though he has accessed both of these powers, they are not something that he can just turn on or off when he wants to. These power-ups happen when he’s under extreme stress.
2. Natsu Is Part Human Part Dragon, And Part Demon
Natsu was revived by his brother Zeref and transformed into the demon called “E.N.D.” This means that he is part human and part demon. Natsu is also a Dragon Slayer, and learning this type of magic implants a Dragon seed within every user. The more they use this magic, the more the seed grows. Eventually, the seed will hatch and turn the user into a dragon as well at one point. Natsu had all the three different seeds fighting inside of him, although he managed to retain his humanity afterward.
3. The Significance Of His Name
For manga artists, giving the perfect name for their protagonist is a really important part of creating their character. Usually, authors will often use themes for thinking up names. For example, in Dragon Ball, a lot of characters are named after food. In Fairy Tail, Hiro Mashima chose to go with season-based names for his main characters. Natsu in Japanese means summer, and he also has the power of flames. Hiro Mashima also named the protagonist of his manga, Rave Master, Haru, which means Spring. And the main character of his current manga Edens Zero is Shiki, which means four seasons. Natsu’s name also matches his happy-go-lucky personality.

4. Natsu Cannot Eat His Own Flames
Natsu being a Dragon Slayer, has many abilities. He can consume the magic of the dragon whose magic they learned. Since Natsu is a Flame Dragon Slayer, he is able to consume any other mage’s flames. Now, this should also mean that he will be able to create his own flames and eat them, too, so as to never run out of energy. However, that is not possible. He cannot eat his own flames. Sometimes, this trope is even used for comedic purposes in the series, like a hungry Natsu not being able to fight against villains.
5. He Is Over 400 Years Old
During the battle of Fairy Tail, Natsu is seen to be trapped inside of a barrier that is supposed to only hold people over 80 years inside. Although viewers did not know at the time that Natsu was much older than 80, that was why that barrier worked. Later on, we get to know that Natsu was born during the era of the Dragons, 400 years in the past. His partner was the Dragon Igneel, and he spent a lot of time training with him. But after he was sent through the Eclipse Gate to the future, Natsu lost all his memories from the past. He forgot everything about his life and what he had done. The only thing he knew was Igneel’s absence.
6. Natsu Has A Dragon Inside Of Him
As you already know, Natsu was born in the age of the Dragons. Throughout the series, the whereabouts of Igneel, his foster parent, have been shrouded in mystery. One day, Igneel and the dragons responsible for training Natsu and other Dragon Slayers all just vanished. No one ever saw them again. But when Acnologia awakened to slay many of the Dragons that were flying through the Eclipse Gate, viewers learned more about Igneel’s whereabouts. He had actually been dormant inside of Natsu, hiding his magic until he had the chance to battle against Acnologia. However, during the fight with Acnologia, Igneel fought bravely and lost his life. He was able to take Acnologia’s arm.
7. His Character Design Had Horns At First
Before a manga or anime is shown to the world, there are numerous character design changes made to the characters. It’s a long creative process for manga artists. In this day and age, the visuals of a character are very important in how much popularity they will be able to gain from fans. For Natsu, the creator wanted him to have horns on his head. He actually did have horns in the Fairy Tail short story, “Fairy Tale”. There, Natsu was shown to be a spirit and had a pair of horns on his head. But afterward, the creators scrapped that idea and made him have a more human appearance.
8. Natsu’s Scarf Is Special
Natsu’s white scarf is the most iconic and noticeable part of his attire. He wears the scarf every day, everywhere, no matter the weather. The scarf is actually made from the scales of his foster parent, Igneel, which means that it is immune to flames. So it only makes sense that the cloth holds such a special place in Natsu’s heart. The scarf has protected him many times during moments of danger. It is able to absorb Zeref’s death magic, but the magic made the scarf change its color to black from white. This incident also held Natsu back. Since the scarf had absorbed dark magic, it became impossible for Natsu to heal his injuries.
9. Natsu Suffers From Motion Sickness
Now, this is an unexpected fact about our protagonist. Natsu gets motion sickness very easily, considering he was trained by dragons. Hiro Mashima had only planned to use this as comedic relief and to give Natsu’s character a weak point. However, later on, it becomes a plot point, as all Dragon Slayers are prone to this on vehicles. At the end of the Fairy Tail series, we get to know this is because of Dragon Slayer magic itself. It is because of the synchronization that occurs between a human’s ears and a dragon’s superior eyesight. Not to fret, though. There are remedies for this. There are special enchantments or specially designed vehicles.
10. He Survived Death
This is one of the biggest plot twists to fans in Fairy Tail. Natsu died four hundred years ago in a Dragon attack that also killed his parents. However, his brother Zeref, overcome with sorrow, could not give up on trying to revive Natsu. Zeref studied all kinds of ways to do so. This angered the Gods as Zeref was trying to go against them. Zeref became imbued with the Curse of Contradictions, which caused him to kill anything he cared about. But this still did not stop him from bringing Natsu back. Natsu was brought back to life as “Etherious Natsu Dragneel” (E.N.D.), a demon with the power to kill him.
