We first see her in the Fellowship of the Ring, the first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003), when the troupe flees the mines of Moria. In the beginning, little is known about this beautiful elf with her long golden tresses and pale gown, and not much is told about her throughout the series, at least not all that there is to know about her. She is shown in possession of powerful tools, and according to what is told by Gandalf, the Lady seems like an otherworldly being. At times, she feels more powerful than Gandalf, the all-powerful magician. Beautiful tall, and slender, everyone was enamored with at the end of Peter Jackson’s trilogy. Played by Cate Blanchett, her sweet countenance and her ferocious dark form are all part and parcel of the sublimity of the character.
From the time she meets Frodo in the woods to her sending the hobbit on his way with the light of Eärendil’s star, everyone was transfixed by her power and nobility. This makes one wonder, ‘How powerful is Galadriel, and why is she so powerful?’ and we are here to answer that question.

Who Is Lady Galadriel?
While the long answer would span for pages, thanks to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Silmarillion, we shall keep to the shorter one. Galadriel is a direct descendant of Tata, the second elf to wake after the creation of Elves, with the blood of the Eldar, the first elves, in her veins. One of the greatest elves in all of Middle-Earth, she is called ‘Lady Galadriel’ by virtue of her being the Lady of the woods of Lothlorien. She is one of the most powerful beings left during the Third Age when the series takes place. She is also one of the two remaining Calaquendi, the elves who dwelt in Valinor— which her father reigned over as king—which, in turn, is the residence of the Valars, beings second only to Eru, the God of Tolkien’s universe. Not to forget, she is a member of the White Council and perhaps the most revered. So, by the nature of who she is, Galadriel is immeasurably formidable, and, being a high elf, she has a say in when she dies. But little do movie fans of Lord of the Rings know that Galadriel is the grandmother of Arwen, the lady love of Aragorn.
What Are The Lady’s Tools, And How Strong Do They Make her?
Some of the most prominent tools that Galadriel has in the movies have to be the Mirror, with which she displays glimpses of the future to Frodo, one of the three rings of power given to the Elvish race, Nenya, with the power of water and the Phial filled by the light of Eärendil’s star that helps the hobbits in the spider’s lair in the Return of the King installment.
Firstly, the mirror. The mirror was a silver basin filled with water, it could show the viewer the past, present, and glimpses of the possible future. In the movie, it shows Frodo, the hobbits of the Shire, being slaughtered. According to the books, the mirror could also show the viewer what they want to see instead of what is to be. Secondly, the ring of power. Nenya was the reason why in the movies, though the whole of Middle-Earth seemed to be at war with each other, the people of Lothlorien do not seem to be affected by it.
The ring has granted Galadriel to shield the woods from harm as its power is of concealment from evil and preservation though that meant that since it is subservient to the One Ring, if the One Ring is destroyed, as it is by the flames of Mordor at the end of the trilogy, all of Lothlorien fades away, which according to the books, it does. And finally, the light of Eärendil’s star. The Phial is so powerful that its mere touch could cease the voice of the ring in his head, and it aids him to defeat the great spider, Shelob, a primordial creature. All these artifacts and many more have been in her possession for a very long time, making Galadriel a force to reckoned with.

What Supernatural Abilities Does Galadriel Have?
Apart from her otherworldly beauty and incredible height of over 6-feet 4-inches, Lady Galadriel is said to possess telekinetic powers since birth, there have been multiple accounts of her communicating without words in the film, especially with Frodo and Gandalf. She is also considered to be very wise and knowledgeable, the reason why Elrond and Saruman made no decisions without consulting her. She is said to have learned her magic when she was still young and residing in the Undying Lands, making her powers strange and beyond the comprehension of others around her. Her hair possessed the power of the Two Trees of Valinor, which is the same power over which wars were fought in the First Age of Middle-Earth, ending in much bloodshed.
How Powerful Is Galadriel Compared To Gandalf?
We can sum up by saying she is incredibly powerful. Though she does not indulge in the Quest of the Ring like Gandalf does, in the few scenes she appears, it is very well understood that this ethereal being is immensely potent. Some argue that Gandalf in his white form after his resurrection is more powerful than Galadriel; nevertheless, some factors come into play. One such being, Gandalf, has great reverence towards her where it looks like he is acknowledging her as a superior being. Not to mention, she is the only one in the Peter Jackson movies who calls Gandalf by his Sindarin name ‘Mithrandir’. Galadriel also has a lot more patience with people than Gandalf does, and she is the one to save him if he needs help, but this does not negate the fact that Gandalf is a Maia, an immortal being created by Eru. Gandalf is a god, though lesser, while Galadriel is an elf in comparison.
Lady Galadriel Is Powerful
Galadriel is powerful and incredibly so. Her powers are a combination of her bloodline, her tools, and her powers. She is in many ways omniscient, having the power to know the future and the thoughts of others. Thus, one can even safely say she is the most powerful mortal being in all of Middle-Earth. If you have not already beheld the majesty of Lady Galadriel, or if you want to binge-watch the series, check it out on Amazon Prime.
It looks like Galadriel is going to make a comeback with “The Rings Of Power” set to be streaming on Amazon from the 2nd of September this year. Directors of the drama say that the Galadriel of The Rings of Power will be very different from the Lady in The Lord of the Rings. So, stay tuned to OtakuKart for more information.
