Who is Hanako Kun? What anime is Hanako Kun from? How did Hanako die? What was he like when he was a human? Ever heard of the proverb, appearances can be deceptive. Hanako is the perfect example of this proverb as he may look like a young elementary school boy but, in actuality, is an extremely powerful more than half a century-year-old ghost. Once a human, Hanko Kun was known as Yugi Amane and is one of the main protagonists of the anime Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun based on the manga series of the same name. Otakus have become really curious about the mysterious young boy who holds the title of a powerful ghost.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun: Synopsis  

The story of Hanako-san, or the story of the ghost of a little girl who haunts schools’ lavatories, is one of the most well-known Japanese urban legends. Hanako-san’s legend has its own variation at the Kamome Academy. According to the school’s legend, if one is successful in summoning Hanako-san, she will grant aby request of the summoner. Kamome Academy has seen many individuals throughout the years trying to summon her due to the legends, with each attempt ending in failure. When Nene Yashiro, a young student of the Kamome Academy, seeking love, summons Hanako-san, in a shocking turn of events, realizes that the fabled girl is actually a young boy.

Thus begins the thrilling journey of Nene, who gets unwittingly enmeshed in the world of the supernatural by becoming Hanako’s helper. After a sequence of terrible incidents concerning her amorous interests, she soon discovers Hanako Kun’s secret responsibility, which is preserving the delicate balance between mortals and supernatural beings.

Released in 2020, Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun has so far one season and a total of 12 episodes. It is available for streaming on a variety of platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, and more.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun is originally a manga series authored by Aidalro and has been serialized in Monthly GFantasy, a shonen manga magazine published by Square Enix since 2014. As of now, it has been collected in sixteen Tankobon volumes. Due to the manga’s success, Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun was later adapted into an anime series in 2020.

So far, only some parts of Hanako’s past have been revealed in the anime as well as the manga. What we know as of now is that Hanako had been through a lot in his life and that he overall had a really terrible past as a human. Known as Yugi Amane, Hanako died due to unknown reasons. His cause of death so far hasn’t been revealed in the anime as well as the manga. After killing his own twin brother, Yugi Tsukasa, Amane died shortly after at the young age of 13. Later on, after becoming a ghost, Amane took up the name of Hanako and became the seventh mystery of the Kamome Academy.

It has been shown throughout the manga that Hanako still possesses a lot of guilt even after so many years for killing his own brother Tsukasa. Thus, many fans are of the opinion that this guilt might have been too much for Amane to bear, which could have led him to commit suicide. However, one should keep in mind that this is just a theory. As the manga is still in publication, we are sure that the cause of Hanako’s death will be revealed sooner or later. Let’s all hope that our favorite character didn’t have such a tragic end.
